Hope During the Age of Trump

And I believe that even if I don’t personally live to see the next iteration of the rise of goodness in Americans come to fruition overcoming the intolerant, power-hungry, charlatans like you and this current GOP-controlled Congress, it.will.come.
And when it does, you and the scumbags you encourage will once again be relegated to the dark moist places where roaches belong; ridiculed by those around you and for generations to come.

The Biggest DonCon of All: “America First” is Making America Worst

Just as Herbert Hoover, the last Republican “businessman” did, President Trump and the GOP has implemented isolationism, personal enrichment, and a gross ignorance of knowledge about governmental economics, into a death spiral for the U.S., in the world leadership role. Incidentally, Hoover also had an all-Republican Congress at his disposal. Big frigging surprise! First, they…

Congress Should Have Only One Priority When They Return

Congress, in the midst of a month-long August recess, faces a massive policy threat when lawmakers return to Washington next month. By the end of September, Congress must approve legislation to raise the nation’s debt ceiling — or risk an economic disaster. And if the had any sense at all, they’d do away with the entire antiquated law,…

Donald Trump is the Inevitable Result of Decades of Republican Blame-ism

Republicans like to own a lot of things, but responsibility is not one of them. It wasn’t their fault that good, godly, white people were working harder than ever and still falling behind. It wasn’t their fault that the only thing the Invisible Hand gave its working class believers was the middle finger. It wasn’t their fault that their tantalizing promises had come to nothing.
It was the fault of those uppity non-white people. They’re the ones who are taking your jobs and sucking up all your tax money on hand-outs and telling you that you are not even allowed to be a man anymore. It’s their fault!

Here We Go Again with Adjustable Rate Mortgages

While virtually every other country in the industrialized world is in the beginning phase of a sustainable economic revival, [despite having single-payer healthcare for all their citizens] the U.S. GOP-led Congress is trying every way they know how to toss millions of Americans off of healthcare for profit, trickling down the backs of 99% of…

Trump Sycophants on Disgusting Display Before Senate Intel Committee

If I had ever used the excuse to my parents that Trump’s National Security Agency Director (Admiral Michael S. Rogers), Director of National Intelligence (Daniel Coats), or Attorney General (Jeffrey Beauregard Sessions), used for not answering questions posed by the Senate Oversight Committee on Intelligence, (“I don’t feel like it”), I wouldn’t have been able…

Has the U.S. EVER Been “Of, By, and For the People”?

Underneath the hyper-partisanship currently infecting the United States, is there a deeper, fundamental lack of morality in its economics and politics? Is it something new or has it been glossed over since our separation from England? There is, of course, our obsession with winning, which is on blatant display if you ever get sucked into…

It’s Not the Voltage That Will Kill You, It’s the Grid

Imagine the Southwest or Southeast powerless for all of July or August. Tens of thousands could die. Billions of dollars would be lost in wages, grocery inventories, retail. Same would be true with the Northeast or Midwest for all of February. It would be the Mother of All Recessions. Distribution networks, airlines, trucking, would all be in chaos. All because one political party wants to ensure that renewable energy doesn’t get a foothold against coal, nuclear, or fossil fuels that generate our life-preserving electricity. Gasoline, water, food become useless. All while the GOP governing party can seem to worry about are important issues like which bathroom we can use.

The Future of the United States Clearly Depends on U.S. Women

“I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that President Trump presents the biggest threat to women’s progress we’ve seen in the last 50 years,” states Ms Farrell, whose group works for equal protection for women in law, in the workplace, and in schools. “Some of it is under the radar, and some of it is right in front of us. But what’s happening at the federal level is not only terrifying. It’s an outrage,” she says.

GOP Sells All America’s Internet Privacy for Political Greed

The hypocrisy at play here flows like volcanic lava : The man who has raged endlessly at the alleged surveillance of the communications of his aides (and potentially himself) will soon sign a bill that allows unrestrained sale of the personal information of any American using the internet. Apparently, the Trump administration and its allies in Congress value privacy for themselves over the privacy of the Americans who voted them into office. What is good business for powerful cable and phone companies is just tough shit for the rest of us as long as the GOP can maintain favored status come corporate donation time.

Dear Donald: You Are One Sick Puppy-Get Help

You even fashioned yourself as a modern day reincarnation of Emperor Maximus Ronaldo Reaganus. But even though Reagan was also old and used makeup on his hair to make himself look younger, he had one key quality that you don’t have: He knew what he didn’t know. And he had at least been the Governor of California, the sixth largest economy in the world, just ahead of France! All you have are failed, bankrupt businesses you started, pillaged, then filed bankruptcy leaving investors to pay your bills.

Admittedly, neither of you nor Ronny Raygun ever knew shit about macroeconomics, and both of you fashioned yourselves as macro-managers who didn’t need to get buried in the details of things like laws, policies, rules, selling arms to Iran contras, etc. But President Reagan was at least smart enough not to get indebted to the Russian communists and was confident enough to accept that he needed experts to lean on who were familiar with how to get things done in Washington.

Lost in the Trump-Russia Tango? China

There will be many losers in a world of escalating tensions and disruption, but the U.S. stands to be the biggest loser given China’s new found preeminence as the “sane” option in the U.S.-China-Russia-EU tumult especially given Britain’s wrench thrown into the European Union’s spokes.China would not have picked this moment for a fight with the US. But if it can merge its own economic arrangements in the region and beyond, using its economic muscle—and now, remarkably, its political savvy and sense of “normality and stability”— muscle to its diplomatic and political advantage while escaping the burden of censure that its internal repression used to provoke, it will be a huge win for China.

Democrats: Resistance is Great, but NOT ENOUGH!

Resistance seems to be getting all the buzz these days since our President is almost certainly a raging lunatic and Congress is hell bent on turning the U.S. into a society where minorities and women have no rights…you know, like ancient Rome, or Ayn Rand World. Don’t get me wrong, showing resistance and showing we…

Trump and the GOP: Lessons Learned? Not According to History

I find it so hard to address any political subject these days, I suppose because The Lügenpresse campaign has been such a complete success with Trump’s supporters that they now live in a complete self-constructed, mental North Korea. Add to that the complete acquiescence of the broadcast media to corporate greed, and it seems fairly futile.…

American Exceptionalism: T.O.D.-12:01 pm, January 20th, 2017

Tomorrow’s inauguration will feature bussed-in “supporters” into the capital to celebrate the most serious and representational moment in our country’s democracy, despite the fact that the soon-to-be president is one who tears into an American hero, belittles our allies and praises our most dangerous enemy, deflects sexual harassment suits, settles fake University scams and whines like a baby when any person or poll shows disapproval, and claims ratings of him are rigged unless they’re favorable.
This is how the Trump presidency begins, and the illusion that remained of American Exceptionalism ends. The vastness of America’s vision, inclusiveness, and goodwill towards others has succumbed to the pettiness, and divisiveness of Trump and his ilk.

The hundred years of American Exceptionalism regresses, 140 characters at a time. SAD!

Repeal and Replace Ironies Bite Like a Great White Shark

Come on, we all know why the GOP wants to repeal ACA…because doing so would be a huge tax cut for the wealthy for pete’s sake. The rest is just hogwash. Congratulations Republican and Trump voters; you wanted communism and a Putin puppet so that only the wealthy and well connected comrades benefit from government? You’re about to get your wish and more in 3 days.
Do svidaniya i udachi.

Tariffs and Trade Wars: Trump’s Death Star for U.S. Economy

What Trump and Republicans don’t understand is that tariffs don’t operate in a vacuum, and it’s how macroeconomics is beset with traps and vicious consequences that don’t exist in microeconomics. A border tax would boost inflation by dramatically increasing the cost of everyday items imported from China and elsewhere regardless of income tax breaks. Corporations even break out their income tax breaks because they they have diminished importance as to operational profits,(see EBITDA). Retailers and manufacturers would have to pass those tariff costs along to consumers, buy them from a U.S. manufacturer with higher labor costs–which would also be passed along to the consumer–or just stop selling the item(s). Either way, the consumer’s discretionary income, if they have any, gets pinched or they have fewer choices from fewer competitors which means higher prices as well.

Ground Zero for U.S. Economy: Private Pension Insolvencies

It’s just another ticking time bomb facing the US economy, which faces dramatic cuts in public services, and if Paul Ryan has his way, Medicare and Social Security will suffer the same fate as billions more in profits flow to the shareholders, CEOs, and the wealthiest 1% of Americans with another round of tax cuts coming their way under Trump and the GOP.

And yet the unsuspecting pensioners are the same people who voted Trump and the GOP into virtual total control of our government while claiming to be looking out for the working class. And these are the same ones who will find some way to blame the poor and/or government “giveaways” to them which account for an infinitesimal amount compared to what the wealthiest corporations and individuals receive.

The Student Debt Bubble is Stretched Mighty Thin

The US has a fairly unique problem than other countries; the weak U.S. job market has collided with record levels of educational debt ,[many other countries provide tuition-free public university education] reaching about $35,000 per graduate on AVERAGE. This does not include students who acquire student loans, for myriad reasons never complete their degree requirements, but are nonetheless on the hook for the loans. Together, they pose a hazard of enormous proportions to the future earning power of young Americans, as well as the credit and/or discretionary income of their parents if they co-signed the student loans and could have severe, long-lasting effects on US demand for goods and services and therefore, GDP growth.

Irony’s Death is Brutal at the Hands of the GOP

Republicans, including Barrasso, have relentlessly sabotaged the reform law every step of the way, taking steps unseen at any point in the American history with total impunity in the Lamestream Media. They refused to compromise; they refused to work in good faith towards policy solutions; and they even shut down the government at one point as part of a bizarre anti-health-care tantrum.

Sub-Prime Credit Bubble Ready to Burst(No,Not on Houses)

Just last week, Ford Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks told analysts that the company’s finance arm, Ford Credit, cut its forecast for 2017 pretax profits because of declining auction values for used cars. (Any guesses as to what this means for the likelihood that Donald Trump can make good on his promise to bring back manually-assembled automobile jobs? How about if he slaps a tariff on imported vehicles for companies who took their plants and fled to lower-wage countries? Anybody?)
Credit agencies, such as Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s and Fitch, so far, have expressed mild concern about the trend. Their focus is on the $38-billion market for securities backed by auto loans. These are bundles of auto loans, similar to the tranches of mortgages that collapsed in the 2007 crash of the housing bubble. Of course these are the same credit agencies that were telling us everything was fine in the housing market right before it crashed too.

Get Angry, Get Busy. This is a GOP War Against Democracy!

Bernie and Clinton should have found a way to work against the common enemy before, not after the primaries. We should have concentrated on finding a way to connect with the middle class, including the blue collar voters whose livelihoods have slipped away due to technology, not trade deals. With Bernie against trade deals he missed the mark. With Clinton for TPP, an EXCEPTIONALLY BAD trade deal she missed the mark. How the hell did we think we could win fighting against one another and a Party that will lie, cheat and steal? If Progressives don’t start developing a cogent, simple and concise winning strategy for 2018 and implementing it NOW we could be lost forever.

Our Constitution Says: Electoral College Can Overturn Trump

Because of the way Congress permits the states to gerrymander congressional districts, the party with the most votes will not be the majority in the House. And because of the way the Framers crafted the Senate, the party with the most votes will not be the majority in that body either.
Only one of these three anti-democratic outcomes is actually compelled by our Constitution: the Senate. I, for one, would be happy to accept that one compromise.
But the same Constitution that denies the majority its will automatically in every branch of government has explicitly given a representative body the right to speak for the will of the majority.

YUGE Opportunities for Progressives in the Rubble of Defeat

I’m telling you right now, even if Trump succeeds in miraculously bringing those manual labor jobs back, which he won’t, it will cost us dearly in not pursuing innovations that other countries are vigorously chasing. The longer we stay stuck waiting for an orange savior to bring back obsolete, polluting, and unhealthy jobs, the longer we are denying ourselves the opportunity to move towards progress. Progressives need to regroup, toughen up, and figure out a way to address what we are going to do when Trump’s promises fail to bring back those jobs…because he WILL fail.

America: Ask Not for Whom Trump’s Bell Tolls; It Tolls for Democracy

In the broader context, Trumpism represents the repudiation of the most forceful arguments that American exceptionalism is a real thing. An exceptional country would recognize the infectious nature of fear and hatred more quickly and forcefully eradicate it. An exceptional Republican Party would have more than two lonely Republican members of Congress putting their country before their Party by disavowing Trumpism rather than the spineless drivel ejaculating from GOP luminaries like, “I’m not endorsing Trump, but I’m voting for him” and standing quietly, trembling like cowards, as a hate-filled, serial liar represents their Party before the country and the world.

What Happens After November 8th? Adapt or Die

Trump promises to bring their jobs back. But most of their jobs didn’t go to a Mexican, Indonesian, Chinese, Vietnamese, or South Korean. They went to a microchip. Technology and robotics, not NAFTA killed the “dirty steel”, coal, and numerous other manual labor jobs that once fueled our economy. And NEWSFLASH: They are NOT coming back any more than building stage coaches or horse-drawn carriages are coming back. The smartest thing we can do now is to keep our economy as open and readjust more quickly than anyone else.

Can Capitalism Survive the Technology/Robot Revolution?

Everything consumed in the U.S. other than locally grown produce has, at some point in its life history, been on an 18-wheeler. Freight companies are already testing driver-less 18-wheelers. There are currently 3.5 million Truck drivers and 8.7 million employed in the industry. If you throw in the truck stops, repairs, and other services directly dependent on trucks that number explodes to over 13 million full-time jobs. That’s over 10% of the entire U.S. workforce. And they could conceivably all be gone in just fifteen years.

This is Not How Politics Should Operate in America

HOW do people learn to accept what they once found unacceptable? In this millennium, it started with President Obama’s first State of the Union Address when Joe Walsh (R)-SC, took it upon himself to act like he was at a hog calling contest rather than a joint meeting of Congress and the Supreme Court when…

GOP & TV Media : Trump’s Yours-You Broke It You Own It

It was bad enough that we voters, who at least had hoped to see an actual debate between the candidates of the two major American political parties, had to spend the last 48 hours listening to a tape of Donald Trump discussing his sexual assault techniques, from grabbing genitals to forcing kisses. But Donald Trump, the…

A Badly Missed Debate Issue–The Supreme Court

Ever since the ultra-conservative trifecta of Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, and John Roberts began running roughshod over the most activist Supreme Court in history—from giving the 2000 election to George W. Bush to the completely anti-Democracy ruling in Citizen’s United and the repeal of the Voting Rights Act which declared racism dead in America—we’ve seen money become the equivalent of free speech, and corporations take on the rights of individuals.

Tonight’s Presidential Debate Will Exonerate or Condemn the Media

The presidential debates are far too important to get wigged out about the mean things some people are saying about you on Twitter. It’s time the television news media to get its shit together. We have had enough drama. Now, we just need some answers. I guess we’ll see if Holt is up to it and if ComCast has throttled him in order to appease the owner of NBC’s The Apprentice over serving the American public’s right to a fair and impartial moderator for a Presidential debate.

Want Fascism in America? Vote Trump or Third Party

This is how fascism takes over in America; not with jackboots and salutes (although there have certainly been those at his rallies) but with a television con man, a phony billionaire, a textbook egomaniac “tapping into” popular resentments, a national political party he supposedly represents remaining mostly silent, out of ambition or blind party loyalty, or simply out of fear; and a national press corps who has been neutered by the lure of profit by entertainment conglomerates rather than being watchdog journalists.

Hillary and Millennials: The Consequences of Indifference

Trump’s echoes of fascist movements past has no significance with them beyond class settings. It’s the difference between seeing a tornado rip through a neighborhood on television and being in that neighborhood as it happens.
Because they have no personal frame of reference, when millennials see Trump, they think only of a silly reality television show star, not a burgeoning autocrat with a larger-than-expected fanatical, white supremacist, well-armed following. If Trump wins, they’ll get their chance to witness real upheaval on a nationwide scale first-hand. Until then they will go on believing that idealism is the same as realism.

Voting Third Party in 2016 Isn’t Progressive, It’s Immoral

On this anniversary of the result of electing a totally inadequate individual to President of the United States, I get sick to my stomach every time I hear the name Ralph Nader. Whether or not Nader actually cost Al Gore the 2000 election is undeniable unless you believe a) that Obama is coming for your guns, b)…

Trump’s Dangerous Liaisons

With no U.S. banks willing to finance his scams, he has borrowed large sums of money from Russian dictator Vladimir Putin who makes no bone about intensely wanting to exact revenge on the U.S. and NATO. But if Trump can’t deliver inside scoop, Putin won’t need him any longer.Trump needed a new big money scam…badly. He started setting the stage for the mother lode of easy money for a con artist…political donations.

The Reason Republicans Still Endorse Donald Trump

Not one Republican spoke up when George W. Bush spent $3 trillion dollars from Social Security/Medicare and left it off the financial reporting each year, which, if reported correctly, increases what we call the “national debt”. When Obama took office, he ordered the report to reflect the actual debt. So the Republican spinmeisters have always included it in their representation of Obama running up the debt, when actually, all he did was report it correctly.

Trump’s Media: They are Pavlov & We’re the Slobbering Dogs?

The average American lives in a world where fantasy is reality, where the image is more important than content. We don’t dare face our own bewilderment because the comfort of belief in a contrived reality is embedded in our self-image. We have become eager accessories to the great hoaxes of the era…the hoaxes we play on ourselves by believing political jibberish ginned up by “news” to keep us emotionally addicted…The television news media drained the national political gene pool of whatever substance it had once Walter Cronkite, Huntley & Brinkley, Peter Jennings, and their respective networks stopped providing truth for the public good

Giulliani Latest Republican to Show Blatant Racism

With all the shootings of both black people and police from Minnesota to Louisiana, politicians have been looking for either the right way to respond to the violence or the politically expedient way. There were many individuals, both politicians and celebrities, who sought to ratchet down the inflammatory rhetoric and advocate that, as a country,…

Trump is Channeling George Wallace Racism Vote

Donald Trump has always been known as an egotistical, pompous New York businessman who craves the media spotlight. But if you unravel the forces at work behind his support as a politician, Trump most resembles a old time Southern demagogue, George Wallace, not some kind of New York business genius who has more bankruptcies and…

There Are Too Many “Me”s In the American Dream

As tomorrow is Independence Day, I feel the need to express my constantly expanding frustration that Americans are generally divided into two main groups, each with many subgroups of course. But the preponderance of all groups seem to agree one thing: They are disgusted with politicians. Washington seems to be eternally broken ever since Newt…

Catch a Falling Ken Starr: Baylor & Starr Redefine Christian Values

Anybody that tells you that Karma isn’t a bitch, tell them to take a look at Ken Starr; former celebrated conservative Special Prosecutor who exploited his position during Bill Clinton’s administration for political expediency and to further his own career. Now he’s the former President and Chancellor for the largest Baptist University in the world…

Welcome to Progress HG-Formerly Liberalbeef

Thanks for visiting my new web site. After six years of trying to help spread facts, statistics, and opinions based in fact, (under the name Liberalbeef) rather than the propaganda and fluff you get from the vast majority of right-wing or Corporate-owned media, I have transitioned from my former site into a new, more professional…

Brexit: The Day After-What Happens Now?

Brexit—“This is what happens when you try to fix a faulty watch with a hammer” J.K. Rowling If The Brexit vote demonstrated anything, it at least demonstrated this: there are definable limits to the effectiveness of U.S. pressure even among our staunchest allies. While the U.S. has a long history of interfering in the votes…

Brexit: The Biggest Story Being Ignored In the U.S.

A referendum—basically a vote in which everyone (or nearly everyone) of voting age can take part, normally giving a “Yes” or “No” answer to a question—is being held on Thursday, 23 June to decide whether Britain should leave or remain in the European Union. (Brexit is a shorthand way of saying Britain leaving the EU).…

GOP Reasons on Wage Suppression Are Typical Lies

For more than 100 years, opponents to raising wages have used their apocalyptic visions of economic collapse to justify the suppression of wages,income, legal rights, and even medical care to inflict wage suppression on everyone for the benefit of white, privileged, wealthy or corporate interests. Economists and historians have time and again repudiated those gloomy…

Trump and (I’m Sorry) Sanders Lack Trade Policy Bona Fides

One of Donald Trump’s YUGE selling points to his under educated supporters on the campaign trail has been the supposed damage China and Mexico are doing to our manufacturing jobs. NAFTA, he proclaims, is the problem and he will impose YUUUUGE tariffs on them so that manufacturing will be more economical if done here in the States.…

Tax Solutions Both Democratic Candidates Ignore

The tax reform plans of the two Democratic candidates for President say a lot about our outdated federal tax system. It was designed for the industrial economy, early 20th century. Both candidates promise reform, but their plans just diddle around the edges. Neither of them addresses some major reasons the federal tax system imposes far…

Some Liberals Are Exhibiting A False Sense of Morality

I find myself becoming increasingly disappointed with some of my left-leaning peers and friends. Many seem to have forgotten, or simply deny, the irrefutable truth that idealism is not a foundation for governance. This growing disconnect from reality manifests itself in these progressives expressing “deep disappointment” in President Obama and worse, destructive vows to deny…

Trickle Down Economics Murdered the Middle Class

I have to wonder just what it would take for supporters of conservatives who are part of what’s left of the U.S. middle class, or poor whites to realize that if trickle-down economics were going to work they would have done so by now. Ask Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Wisconsin how it’s working for them.…

Democrats Had Better Capitalize on GOP Chaos

After Hillary Clinton delivered her Super Tuesday victory speech, Van Jones said on CNN that his Twitter feed was full of people saying that she had stolen Bernie Sanders’s message. But that was only half-true. While Clinton is incorporating more of Sanders’s progressive populism, her campaign narrative is in the typical tradition of American liberalism.…

Citizens United: GOP Wet Dream Turns Into Trump Nightmare

One important element of the years during which Barack Obama was President will be the historical conservative overreach that could very well lead to the collapse of the national-level Republican Party. And it all started with a Supreme Court case that proved to be rat poison that Republicans eagerly swallowed, thinking it was sugar. The…

A Revolution A Website and Anger Could Be an Omen

There is a streaming website called LiveNewsCloud.tv that has been around for quite some time( in a couple of different formats). And has lately become quite a microcosm of the prevailing state of the politically non-conservative mind in the U.S. You see, LiveNewsCloud has almost all available cable news live feeds from the U.S. and still more…

GOP Voter Suppression Disenfranchises Their Own Too

She, like countless others, is a victim of the Republican Party’s attempt to suppress minority voters from voting for a Democrat. But she’s a Republican and white, in the important swing state of North Carolina. So the plan the GOP has so cynically implemented since the election of the first black U.S. President is catching…

The Demographic That Should Worry the GOP? Millennials

The actual big demographic that has the GOP so worried but not talking about isn’t Latinos or Women (notice the capital W) or Minorities (again with a capital)…it’s a way of life demographic that does not fit in with their platform at all. And it’s being ushered in by a group large enough to have…

GOP Hypocrisy Even Belies Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged

The following is an excerpt from Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged:  “Four men sat at a table. Raised sixty floors above the city, they did not speak loudly as one speaks from a height in the freedom of air and space; they kept their voices low, as befitted a cellar.” The four men in this early…

Ongoing Takeover of the U.S. by the Economic Elite is Real

Each new election year brings promises of change, policies that will restore America’s greatness, blah, blah, blah. Again in 2016 we will choose a new president and new representatives in Congress; new faces will make their appearances in Washington DC, while old ones disappear. But what about the people who stay in power, one election…

The Politics of Fear Run Amok

First off, let me state emphatically that it’s my personal belief that law-abiding Americans have every right to own personal defense weapons and fear of demented crooks, rapists and other nutjobs is certainly real. And as long as hunting is regulated, requires hunting licenses, etc., is limited to the seasons as they are, hunting equipment…

The Real War on Christianity Is Being Waged By Republicans

Speaking as a Jewish southern-born-and-bred white male, I sincerely believe that there is a concentrated and cynical “War on Christianity” in America. I’m going to offer a non-Christian and I hope objective observation on just how I think this war is being fought and by whom. Now I’m not saying my observation will be liked…

China’s Economic Problems Have Been Hidden for Years

In light of my numerous columns regarding China’s economic problems dating back a couple of years (http://progresshg.com/2015/08/12/trump-shows-abject-ignorance-on-china-world-economy/ , http://progresshg.com/2015/08/12/trump-shows-abject-ignorance-on-china-world-economy/ just to hyperlink a couple) the recent Chinese stocks sell-off is not surprising to me. Moeover, it’s magnifying concerns about the health of the world’s second-biggest economy…and rightfully so. But beyond the markets, I still maintain that there…

The Rebranded Lethal Tea Party With Trump As Its Leader

Ever since the tea party became a media draw in American politics in 2010, the anti-government folks’ favorite grumble is how the Constitution has been desecrated over the years by presidents, Congress and the courts. It is a meme heard daily on radio and TV talk shows, mostly by conservatives or racists or anyone who…

Despite All the Good Things, Obama Blew Two Critical Calls

For all of the good things President Obama has tried and accomplished during his tenure, I’m going to take a break from deriding the idiotic, cruel and selfish things Republicans have done over the same time and play a little Monday morning quarterbacking for the two things I really really wish President Obama could have…

How to Select the 2016 GOP Candidate:The Biggest Liar Wins

The biggest liar wins. Whoever tells too many truths loses. The more open and honest the candidates, the more they tumble in the polls. The Republicans had another non-debate last night and everybody did their best to out-lie one another. My, how the once-proud U.S. political process has fallen. Can that be true? It sounds…

Ted Cruz and Trump; Cut From the Same Racist Cloth

I’ve actually never worried about Donald Trump becoming President. Sure, in the wacked-out landscape of American politics which allows the likes of Cliven Bundy to mooch off the American taxpayer while decent people (i.e., veterans who fight the wars that are the life blood of our runaway military spending lobbyists) starve, nothing really surprises me…

Fear Peddling NRA/GOP Made U.S. the Home of the Scared

Fear sells. It sells votes. It sells guns. It sells political candidates most of all. According to the latest Washington Post poll, 83 percent of registered voters now think a terrorist attack in the U.S. is likely. When such palpable fear exists, textbook “leaders” would assuage irrational mania, cool the fever and smartly and swiftly address…

A Founding Father’s View on Domestic Terror

There has been a marked propensity for far too many to view the works of “Founding Fathers”, whether in political or religious context,  in a manner that uses selective passages of important documents (let’s go with the U.S. Constitution and the Bible for the sake of this column) for the sake of political argument, (as…

Does Even Trump Believe His Own Lies?

It should be clear by now, at least to any sane, non-hate-filled individual, that Donald Trump decided long ago that the traditional concepts of “true” and “false” have no relevance when it comes to his ego-driven “performances” his competition calls campaigns. Even for Trump, though, the last few weeks have presented a stunning parade of…

GOP Incites Fear of SYRIAN Terror but Not White Males?

With all the tough rhetoric (noun: meaningless bombast regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content) coming from privileged GOP white male candidates about vetting or refusing Syrian refugees, Mexicans, etc., because they might pose a danger to Americans, here’s a PARTIAL list (deadliest) of young males (most are white) who have perpetrated mass murders…

GOP Jobs Policy Is Hokum but Most Dems Disappoint Too

For as long as I can remember, Republicans have been touting that businesses are the job creators and that regulating or taxing businesses will mean fewer jobs—which is why so many Americans believe them. In actuality, businesses don’t create jobs, demand for a product or service creates jobs; but since that takes a little explaining…

GOP Primary Race/Media Clown Show Isn’t Funny At All

Political debates officially went to hell in 1988 when the League of Women Voters refused to host  GOP Presidential debates rather than “perpetuate a fraud” on the American people, but  the current GOP clown show is about as funny as a serial killer who eats kittens. The shameful display of animosity that the GOP holds…

Democratic Socialism for Dummies

A lesson in economics for those of you who think you know what Democratic Socialism is or isn’t: You’re welcome, I did the work for you, all you gotta do is read for 5 minutes…I used everybody’s favorite pastime, football to get it to sink in over the blather you might hear from idiot politicians or…

Is the Republican “Southern Strategy” Finally Unraveling?

Richard Nixon, the most successful, and ironically,  the most shamed GOP president of all time; Richard Nixon, the architect of the cynical yet brilliantly effective “Southern Strategy” (that formed a voting bloc of racists, evangelical Christians and under-educated poor white under-achievers); Richard Nixon, the cynical strategist that devised a plan that not only catapulted himself…

GOP:Nero-esque Fiddlers While Economy, Climate Burn

What happens to the Chinese economy resounds far beyond Shenzhen and Shanghai. The majority of the people in the rest of the world might shrug but economists point to looming troubles unless the idiotic austerity programs still in place in the U.S. and Eurozone don’t back down from the voodoo economics of supply-side theories that…

Your Childrens’ Future is Dying: It’s On You to Save It

The middle class is on the verge of extinction in America and people are mad, frustrated, and feeling helpless to do anything about it. I totally understand it, but it will not change until we change. And I’m not talking about the got-damm budget deficit. Wages for the middle class has stagnated to such a…

Dr. Carson’s Economic Brain Surgery Would Be Malpractice

Like so many other Americans, Ben Carson’s knowledge of government spending and the economy is based in myth, misconception or perhaps lack of intelligence altogether. He may understand medicine, but he knows jack shit about economics. His streak of ridiculous musings on interest rates, the debt and deficit, and even the trade balance culminated in…

Do The NRA-Bribed Republicans Meet the Definition of Insane?

I am admittedly, not the smartest person, but one thing I do know is that insanity or being insane has been defined in many ways; one iteration is “doing nothing and merely hoping that the same thing won’t happen again”….in this case as on Thursday, a 26-year-old male stood outside a classroom and opened fire…

How Low Will the Soul-less American Media Stoop for Trump?

So, anybody, when will the media be embarrassed enough to refuse to continue to give Trump the large, free megaphone they are giving him? Don’t kid yourselves, they are not giving him all this free campaign advertising because he’s the front-runner — we can all stop pretending that’s the reason because it isn’t. It’s because…

Are Republicans Living in a Different World?

To listen to the Republican candidates is to hear an entirely different campaign — one that centers on defeating Islamic State terrorists, deterring a nuclear Iran, restricting abortion, and debating whether to deport illegal immigrants and construct a wall to keep them out. To the Democratic candidates, the 2016 presidential campaign is about shrinking the…

Huckabee, Cruz, Paul, Rubio Advocate for Christian Sharia Law

I know that facts and logic have no place in Republican tradition, but Mike Huckabee, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and Marco Rubio–and the other political grandstanders surrounding Kim Davis–are advocating for a Christian version of Sharia law. How? They set this whole screwed up anti-gay marriage argument for Kim Davis’ refusal to issue marriage licenses…

Jeb Bush Tax Plan a Mirror Image of Brother George’s Lies

Governors like Jeb Bush just love to brag about how they balanced their states’ budgets. They’re counting on voters not realizing that, unlike the federal government, virtually all states are required — either by law or by their constitutions — to have balanced budgets. When Jeb Bush boasts that he balanced Florida’s budget “eight years in a…

Huckabee: Another Faux-Religious Manipulator

Mike Huckabee is supposed to be a bastion of Baptist/Christian philosophy, but in my book, he’s just another in a long line of unconscionable, faux-religious, manipulators of an otherwise perfectly good set of well-meaning people who actually intend to live their lives in a respectable manner. In my opinion, he follows in the footsteps of…

The Stock Market and the Economy ARE NOT the Same Thing!!

First and most importantly, the stock market is not the economy. I cannot count the number of times I have had to explain, during a conversation over the U.S. economy (or any other government for that matter), that when I’m referring to “economies” being in trouble, I’m NOT talking about the frakking stock market. One…

Get Ready to Hear This A LOT!!: It’s Obama’s Fault

It’s all Obama’s fault. Once the RWMPPs (Republican White Male Political Primaries—sorry Dr. Carson and Ms Fiorina; you are irrelevant tokens) mercifully come to an excruciatingly painful end, and the nominee has to make a U-turn on Crazy Street to try and mitigate the damage done among the general population (to which the media will…

Trump’s True Appeal? Hope for Return of White Male Privilege

As Republican presidential candidates begin to set their sites on New Hampshire, they will need to come to grips with the party’s racial animosity that Trump’s surge represents. Look at his true targets; people of color, women who challenge him, and anyone who isn’t looking back at him from his favorite mirror(who am I kidding;…

Bad News from the GOP’s CBO Director-Tax Cuts Don’t Work

The new Republican-appointed director of the Congressional Budget Office delivered some bad news on Tuesday to the party’s “Reaganomics” devotees: Tax cuts don’t pay for themselves through turbocharged economic growth. Never have. Never will. Keith Hall, who served as an economic adviser to former President George W. Bush, made the pronouncement at his first news…

Clinton Emails My ASS–Condi Rice, Colin Powell, GWB All Used Private Servers !!

Hypocrisy has always been a Republican strong suit, so the current iteration regarding Hillary Clinton’s email server is by no mean a surprise. Hyperventilating Republicans rush to the cameras claiming they’ve found the smoking gun proving their political opponents aren’t just wrong, but that they’re criminals. Traffic hungry reporters take “off the record” spin and run…

While You Focus on the Trump Circus, World Markets are Burning

The US Republican-led Congress and the US media focuses on the Trump circus, but the US voter had better wake up to the reality that the conservatives’ idiotic austerity insistence is about to bring about a SERIOUS return to recession and there is nothing the Federal Reserve can do about it this time….they are out…

It Really Pisses Me Off When Democrats Act Like Republicans

You know, it’s bad enough that Republicans cater to only their wealthy donors, but when Democrats start acting like Republicans it’s time for Americans to rise up and unseat these old white nincompoops before they get us all killed. It was bad enough that Billy-Bob Clinton pushed NAFTA through Congress. It was ten times worse…

Trump Shows Abject Ignorance on China, World Economy

China is playing a dangerous game of currency devaluation and manipulation. And like many other serious economic situations around the globe the U.S. media is totally ignoring it to focus on a spoiled, big-mouth, rat-headed, GOP buffoon who has zero understanding of government economics. The Chinese Money Machine is Running on Empty Despite Republican candidate…

Would The Damn Media Please Pay Attention to The TPP?!?

How the hell did Republicans and Obama finally find common grounds on the Trans-Pacific Partnership–The TPP—such a crappy so-called “free trade” agreement that is so bad as to be exponentially worse than NAFTA (in fact it’s called NAFTA on Steroids)and is  incredibly bad for the U.S.?? Is anybody paying attention to anything except Donald Trump’s…

The U.S. Debt and Monsters Under the Bed

Unless you are one of about 10,000 people in the entire United States, whatever you think you know or what you have “learned” from network “news” about the nature, cause and effect, or owners of U.S. debt…more than likely you are wrong. Not that it’s your fault. With all the misinformation being disseminated by lazy…

The Gubmint Don’t Create No Jobs! Debunked Once & For All

A recurring theme in the upcoming GOP Presidential Debates will surely be the role of the government in the economy, and as sure as Donald Trump is a bloviatious blowhard, there will be the tired old assertions that the government cannot create jobs…and that’s just horse pies. It is a fictitious assertion of a biased…

Fools Gold or Golds Fools–Where Are the Goldbugs Now?

A little less than four years ago, the world looked like it was about to end and gold hit an all-time high of $1,895 an ounce and the current batch of goldbugs were clamoring against the Fed. To those of us who know better, it was both funny and sad to watch…kinda like Donald Trump. All things…

Jeb Bush Has No Clue About Overtime Abuse

For all those prospective voters out there that think Jeb Bush is “the smarter Bush brother”, I have sad news for you…he’s an idiot too. The latest proof is Bush’s claim that Barack Obama’s proposal to expand overtime pay to millions more managers and white-collar workers would result in “less overtime pay” and “less wages earned”.…

Candidates Are Not The GOP’s Problem; It’s Their Voters

–Opinion– Donald Trump will not be the Republican nominee for president in 2016, but his surge in popularity highlights the Republican’s real problem—GOP voters. And the inevitable crash-and-burn phase of his nascent campaign has not yet arrived — although his vile and unneccessary attacks on John McCain could turn out to be an indication—but it…

The Real Deal on the Iran Deal

Ever since the election of Barack Obama the goals in American politics have boiled down to this: what matters most isn’t how a political decision compares to ones idyllic outcome. It’s how it compares to the alternative. It’s true for ObamaCare, (the GOP steadfastly insists on repeal but offers no alternative) and it’s true for the…

Greece, China Lesson: Demand Not Central Bank Policy is Key

For a world that has been so oblivious to the fact that central banks cannnot solve almost all economic ills, the dramas unfolding in Greece and China are sobering. Bernanke kept interest rates at zero; nothing happened. The Triumvirate of self-proclaimed “World-Savers” of Greenspan, Summers and Rubin, under Bill Clinton’s administration made matters worse, not…

Greece: What No One is Telling You

Greece: How could the following situations affect the average American? Barred banks, capital controls, the first IMF default by a developed country, EVER, the collapse of a multi-billion-euro bail-out, plans for a referendum that may hasten Greece’s ejection from the single currency, and the impoverishment and desperation of the 99%. Were the stakes not so…

Forget Greece the Economic Story is China’s Stock Freefall

For all the press that’s focusing on tiny Greece and its economic woes, my advice is to forget about Greece…it’s China whose stock market in freefall and that’s the real economic calamity waiting to happen. And as usual, the U.S. media is missing the real story when it comes to possible economic calamity. Yes, in…

The United States of Political Corruption via Citizens United

The framers (I just can’t bring myself to call them the Founding Fathers…some of them were only seventeen years old) debated the consequences of political corruption at the Constitutional Convention in 1787, and Americans have been arguing about it ever since…until Citizens United. What were once called bribes or graft, gifts to politicians are now…

The Confederate Pro-Heritage Debate Is Forever Nullified

Being a Mississippian for 60 of my 62 years (and lived the other two in South Carolina….I swear), debates over displaying the Confederate battle flag are as familiar to me as grits and sweet tea, and I’ve heard the “pro-heritage” meme for all of those years. Now, the two states that have refused to relinquish…

To My Generation:Don’t Doom Our Kids to a Great Depression

“This bill is the most important legislation for financial institutions in the last 50 years. It provides a long-term solution for troubled financial institutions… All in all, I think we hit the jackpot”, the President proudly proclaimed. So declared the President, as he signed a bail-out of the then-largest consumer financial arm of the financial…

The Worst Congress Money Can Buy-Thanks Citizens United

There’s been a big push lately to put an end to an (Un) Supreme Court ruling that is as anti-democracy as Russia– Citizens United. This single ruling—by far the most anti-democracy ruling to come out of the John Roberts shamefully activist, pro-pluotcratic court in history—enabled a foul smelling truth about money in politics to waft across…

♫See The USA in Your Chevrolet ♫–Uh-Uh You’ll Need a Tank

The memory-challenged GOP longs for the 1950s when “See the USA in your Chevrolet” was a popular advertising jingle. But ever since Reagan promised to never raise taxes, then quietly raised Social Security taxes twice along with many income-related taxes eleven times, Republicans have embraced the “supply-side”  theory that tax cuts, more than anything else,…

Think Elections Don’t Matter? Ask Anyone in Jindal’s Louisiana

Next time you think elections don’t matter, talk to someone from Bobby Jindal’s Louisiana. (As a matter of fact, check in with Brownback’s Kansas, Walker’s Wisconsin, Christie’s New Jersey while you’re at it). Baton Rouge is not exactly Shangri-La these days, as Governor Bobby Jindal has all but destroyed the economy, the educational system, including the…

Red States Awash in Red Ink: Laffer Curve Is Properly Named

The lasting Reagan mythology, (that tax cuts are the best way to stimulate growth in the U.S. economy) is that Republicans–especially in “Red States”– find themselves awash in red ink and huge budget deficits from following, a “conservative” theory called the Laffer Curve–as has every Republican administration since Herbert Hoover’s Great Depression. And amazingly, they…

Easy Fix: Wall St. Financial Transaction Tax Scorned by GOP

Ever since I began this web site in 2011, (to try to explain of the 2008 crash, to try to understand why we have a ceiling insead of a floor on Social Security earnings subject to tax, why we were trying to dismantle the Post Office by requiring a non-profit, non-taxpayer-funded organization to fund a…

Republican National Disgraces Pile Up: Infrastructure

Petulant Republicans in the House of Representatives, who no longer have to answer to voters—only a few wealthy donors, (thanks conservatives on the Supreme Court)–continue to disgrace the people of this country and passed a two-month extension of the Highway Trust Fund, which was set to expire at the end of this month. The makeshift…

The Reason Our Tax Structure Could Lead to the Next Crash

Warning bells just keep getting louder and louder as the countdown to the Next Crash keeps ticking. Wall Street’s in denial—or possibly simply trying to make as much money as possible to stash offshore before the shit hits the fan–but the Washington Post warns: “U.S. economic growth slows to 0.2 percent, grinding nearly to a…

Think We’re Immune to Another Great Depression? Read On.

THAT WAS THEN The last Republican administration to reduce the debt or deficit by a single penny was Herbert Hoover’s administration (1929-1933) which played a major role in creating the Great Depression. Hoover’s reduction in government spending during an economic downturn was a primary reason among many others, (#2 was being sucked into reverting to…

Huckabee Epitomizes GOP Faux-Christian Ideology

For at least a couple of decades GOP American presidential politics have been dominated by intensifying ideological conflicts that today’s mediocre media has embraced because the Jerry Springer-Fox News infotainment model states that nothing engenders more heated arguments, ergo more viewers and ad dollars. Tactics of this sort are extremely successful at driving wedges between facts…

Another GOP Lie About Being Veteran-Friendly

The GOP has long billed itself as the “party of the military” and “the party who loves our troops”, but like their claims, it’s all just more bullshit….they could care less about veterans. In a rapidly growing list of GOP lies, (along with trying to shutter the Post Office, backing predatory lenders, a whole host…

Another Bad Re-Make of a Reagan “Tax Plan”

Believe or not, two Republican senators actually proposed a tax plan instead of simply blocking every attempt that Democrats have put forward since Barack Obama took the oath of office. They even made a salient point of fact in a joint op-ed in the March 4th Wall Street Journal and pointed out the somewhat obvious…

GOP Tacit and Spoken Approval of Political Hate

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”  Edmund Burke   It is a sad, but unmistakable, racist, spectacle: As Barack Obama’s presidency heads into its twilight, the rage and hate on daily display within the Republican establishment toward him is growing louder, angrier and more destructive.…

The Day is Coming: We Will Regret Conservative Economics

Conservative U.S. governors who were swept into office during the 2010 liberal-voter-sit-your-lazy-ass-at-home tea party electoral sweep are facing a sad, hard reality check. While a few years ago, by catering to a far-right constituency, they campaigned on pledges of slashing taxes and bolstering business, their subsequent policies have benefited the wealthy but failed to bring…

A Change of Venue

There wil be a brief lull in posts to Liberal Beef as I will be enjoying a change of venue for a while. I will return in early May to posting politics, economics and the sad fusion of the two. Thanks to those of you who stick with me. Harvey A. Gold Mi casa durante un…

Fleecing Homeowners and Foreclosures: Obama & GOP

Barney Franks new autobiography has many revelations in it; a critical revelation is one that implicates the most powerful Democrat in the nation ignoring the plight of homeowner foreclosures during the 2007 housing crash that has been all but entirely expunged from the official records. The media has, of course, focused on the more salacious…

It’s the GOP F*cking Up the Economy, Stupid!

Despite efforts by right-wing, fuzzy-math, austerity-fanatical, gold-obsessed politicians, the world economy remains stuck in the same rut that it has been in since emerging from the 2008 global financial crisis. This should be especially obvious despite seemingly strong government action in Europe and the United States, where both economies suffered deep and prolonged economic downturns.…

Republicans Paint Themselves Into a Corner

Republicans have managed to paint themselves into a corner that the offspring of the Flying Wallendas and Houdini would find difficult to traverse. As my grandpa used to tell me, “Be careful what you wish for boy, if you get it, you might just not know what to do with it and it’ll bite you…

60 Minutes Social Security Tale Rife with Errors

One of the few remaining decent “news” programs, 60 Minutes, has devolved into just another program filled with infotainment, puff pieces, and worse, hit pieces based on someone else’s reporting rather than doing their own. Learning nothing from Lara Logan’s infamous ridiculously inaccurate and proven flawed piece that blatantly pandered to the Benghazi “troofers”, 60 Minutes…

47 GOP Senators Lead: With Their Heads Up Their Asses

In any other country, the kind of idiocy shown by the 47 GOP Senators who signed the Tom Cotton letter to Iranian leaders would be met with ridicule and possibly public flogging. And these are the people who claimed that Obama was not ready for Prime Time? These idiots aren’t even ready for the Saturday…

A Corporatist Constitution:The Roberts Legacy

In direct contrast to its original iteration, The U.S. Constitution adopted in 1787, (which replaced the original document declared by George Washington as “contrary to ideals of the new republic” and forebodingly named the “Articles of Confederation” (see chart below for comparisons) emphasized that the U.S. Supreme Court should be the “supreme law of the…

The GOP Obsession With Keystone Explained

Here’s something I initially did not understand— the GOP’s fixation with the Keystone XL pipeline, especially why they made it the first thing they chose to address in 2015 right out if the gate, out of the myriad urgent issues from which they could have chosen. Even more befuddling was that they followed that idiotic exercise…

Serial Job Killers: Conservative Economics

I hope the next time your right-wing family member or former high school classmate posts a snide remark about out how taxing the wealthy or increasing workers’ wages are jobs killers or that they entice businesses to leave the state, please, do yourself a big favor and show them the FACTS below….not that facts have…

Supply-Side Economics Implode; More to Come

Call it the Laffer Curve, Reaganomics, Austerity, supply-side economics, the Pro-Growth Agenda; it was the same argument. We’ve been hearing it for over thirty years: “Cut income tax rates for the wealthy and supply-side prosperity follows.” There were national and international battles of course, but until recently U.S. state governments had escaped the ideological barricades.…

I’m Begging You Hillary; Not Larry Summers!!

According to former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers – who is emerging as a key economic adviser to Hillary Clinton  and succeeded Rubin as Secretary of the Treasury under Bill Clinton—was the was also played an influential role in the American advised privatization of the economies of the Post-Soviet states, and in the deregulation of the U.S financial system, including…

Is Surrender to Misinformed Deniers Inevitable?

As I seek to put some distance—both physically and in the amount of time I spend wondering how many times must Americans repeat mistakes and continue to expand the divides between the haves and the have-nots—between myself and the U.S., I have to learn to simply stare in amazement at the strident denial of evidence…

Low-Wage Growth is Masking a Looming Disaster

Something has been clear in every single Bureau of Labor Statistics monthly jobs report over the last several years: The growth in the number of jobs has largely been in low-wage positions. In other words, the jobs that are coming back aren’t the same ones that went away during the Great Recession. Service jobs, part-time…

Dems Moaning, Repubs Smirking, What Now?

With all the Democratic moaning and the Republican smirking, everyone seems to agree: Democrats were destroyed, once again, by the party’s own infamous, albeit typical, downright astonishing ineptitude at executing (mostly) very good ideas and mushy, scared campaigns. Liberals across American are once again licking their wounds in a sort of flabbergasted, how-could-this-happen disbelief, as…

My New Year’s Wish: Less Hyperbole More Solutions

My high school English teacher was a spiteful, cranky, ok, I’ll say it, a down-right mean old coot of a woman. She had various aliases–“Iron Jaw” is the only one I can say in print without worrying about her ghost reaching out from the meta-sphere and crushing my man parts. But she taught me one…

Wanna Know How Politics Makes Us All Dumber?

There’s a basic assumption that lies at the base of politics in the U.S. It hides just under the surface of every speech, editorial, article, essay, blog and talking-head “news” program. It’s assumed to be the very core of our Constitution. It’s the belief that most of our bitter political battles are simply based on…

Don’t Get Used to Low Gas Prices-Big Ethanol is Lobbying

(updated from October 22, 2014) Weakening demand for gasoline–which also affects ethanol producers–is getting ready to hit the front pages of a few major news outlets–but you won’t see this on any televised news–and not for a reason known by average Americans. U.S. ethanol producers are approaching the so-called “blend wall,” a term used to define a condition…

Has Extreme Obsrtuctionism Made Washington Irrelevant?

Washington has become so ineffective at addressing the preponderance of our nation’s problems—to the degree that it’s existence is almost irrelevant, and in some cases a downright threat to the country— it’s become irrelevant in making the bold and decisive moves required of it, under the Constitution, to provide for the safety of its citizens.…

Will the U.S. Follow the GOP Into Great Depression 2.0?

There is a reason why it has taken so long to emerge from George W. Bush’s Great Recession. And the Republican leaders of the House and Senate with their new majorities typify why we have barely emerged from it; and one of the reasons why I think we are headed full speed for another Great…

Democrats Forget That Voters Want to Hear Candidates’ Narratives

Apparently, post-election unanimity is that Democrats were missing a narrative that connects progressive and populist policies to how it will benefit, “a broad economic message to enthuse supporters…” according to The New York Times. Now, I’m not the New York Times, but where was this insightful analysis BEFORE the election? And what would that missing narrative…

If Democrats Lose the Midterms It’s Their Own Fault

Let me be brutally honest; if the Democrats lose like they’re supposed to lose according to polls, they have nobody to blame but themselves. With the GOP’s intensely anti-Main Street meme, how the hell can Republicans not be getting strung up in effigy across the entire span of middle-class America? How have they managed to…

Don’t Get Used to Lower Gas Prices-Big Ethanol is Pouting

Weakening demand for gasoline–which also affects ethanol producers–is getting ready to hit the front pages of a few major news outlets–but you won’t see this on any televised news–and not for a reason known by average Americans. U.S. ethanol producers are approaching the so-called “blend wall,” a term used to define a condition where the 10% blend of…

GOP Budgets: If Math Doesn’t Work Alter Scoring Method

Last month, in a speech to the Financial Services Roundtable, GOP “budget guru” Rep. Paul Ryan floated a few ideas for the assumed Republican Senate majority. “Our rules in Congress require that we don’t take into consideration behavioral changes or economic effects as a result of tax reform,” he said. “What we want to do is change…

Why I’m Worried About Slack in Unemployment Rate

In regards to today’s unemployment number release showing the lowest rate since before the George Bush housing collapse (it came in at 5.9 percent), I feel it’s my obligation to tamp down any undue euphoria–regardless of how it might help Democrats in the upcoming mid-term elections–because there’s considerable slack, in terms of underutilized resources, in…

Re-Writing History is GOP Politics 101

I used to think that the de-emphasis on math and science–not to mention the idiocy of kids ridiculing other kids for being smart–was the United States’ weakest link in our hope for a prosperous future, but what could surpass even the forementioned idiocy, is that the political mind set of late, in the GOP, has…

The (non)Mysterious Vanishing Deficit

If I were to assume the persona of Sherlock Holmes, in explaining what has happened to the vanishing deficit, I would be inclined to make the following observation; “As a rule, the more bizarre a thing is the less mysterious it proves to be”.  Voters with long memories–by U.S. standards anyway–might recall that from 2010-2013…

Hey SCOTUS/GOP-Money is Property not Speech

Today the U.S. Senate voted on Senate Joint Resolution 19, a constitutional amendment that would once again allow the federal and state governments to place limits on political campaign spending because our illustrious Supreme Court doesn’t know the difference between free speech and property. That said, the “Democracy for All” amendment merits passage. The reason that it won’t…

The Extinction of American Democracy and Middle Class

It seems appropriate to express the possible extinction of democracy and the American working class on a day that is supposed to honor them.  Why? Because Americans are sick of to death of politics and especially corrupt, incompetent, or hypocritical, lying politicians that has devastated both our system of democracy and its backbone…the middle class.…

Austerity: Punishing the Poor for Mistakes of the Rich

Why can’t Americans take the simple action to look across the ocean and see just how badly austerity devastates economies, and especially the poor, during economic downturns? Do we really want the same to happen here just to make President Obama look bad? Really? Because this is what you can expect if we keep cutting…

More Than Ever It Takes Having Money to Make Money

Despite being a country that wants to be known for its movie-star image of being the land of opportunity where there exists endless ways and the means to earn lots of money, now more than ever, the only people making money are the people who already have money….lots of money….the 1% kind of money. I’ve…

Capital Gains Tax Breaks Funnel $2T in Subsidies to the 1%

The tax code’s special treatment of investment income (Capital Gains) is why Mitt Romney made national news with the statement, “What’s the effective rate I’ve been paying? It’s probably closer to the 15 percent rate than anything.” during the 2012 presidential election. It meant he paid a lower effective tax rate than all middle-class Americans. That…

Dorothy, the Austerity Tornado Took Your Red Heels. Kansas is Toast.

Ultra-Red-State Kansas, the poster child for cutting taxes sharply in line with austerity recommendations of the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, has implemented its calls for deep tax cuts and limits on revenues and spending which reflect extreme “supply side” and anti-tax arguments that mainstream economic research discredited long ago, the Center on Budget and Policy…

Thomas Jefferson: Typical Teabag Hypocrite

On July Fourth, the people of the United States celebrate the high-blown expressions on human rights that Thomas Jefferson penned in the Declaration of Independence – especially the noble phrase “all men are created equal.” But Jefferson really didn’t believe that or much else that he said and wrote during his lifetime. He was, in…

GOP Austerity Could Kill You…on the Highways

The latest battle over taxes and GOP austerity is hitting the highway, and could kill anyone reading this article including you, your children, or your children’s children. As Democrats have been trying to reason with Congressional Republicans in general, and Tea Party zealots in particular, our roads and bridges, as badly degraded as they are,…

Trickle-Down Caused the River of Wealth to Flow Upstream

We are currently witnessing the most profound ‘Great Transfer’ of wealth from the middle and lower-class income earners to the top 1% in the history of the world. I wish that were a hyperbolic overstatement, but sadly it is not. The second half of Thomas Piketty’s provocative book, Capital in the 21st Century, addresses the structure and causes of…

Conservatives Panic Over Piketty’s “Capital” Popularity

While most still solvent Americans were celebrating Memorial Day with Brats and Burgers, an elite cadre of economists was locked away in dens and private nooks, pouring over data sets by bankers lights or pounding keyboards to express opinions on the French economist Thomas Piketty. Wow, can you say “par-tay”? Piketty’s simplistically titled but exhaustively…

The Painful Results of Trickle Down Gullibility

At various pivotal points in history, the United States has had the good fortune to cobble together a reasonable action, despite many powerful, unreasonable factions opposing it; but the idea that one shouldn’t worry about inequality because everyone will benefit, as in Ronald Reagan’s now infamous “trickle down” theory, has fortunately been thoroughly discredited. In…

Cliven Bundy: ♫♬Bullshit on the Range♫♬

The story of Cliven Bundy, a Nevada cattle rancher, had all the elements of typical perverted, hypocritical, political theater; making it inevitable that he would become a hero in the sanitarium that is the conservative blogosphere, (which means the wheelhouse of Fox News). The story, as fantasized in those bizarre-o world forums, went something like this: Heavily-armed federal…

Capitalism Will Not Survive a GOP Senate Take-Over

Capitalism is not perfect and is vulnerable to both human nature and major flaws that have flourished since the Presidency of Ronald Reagan. In order for true Capitalism to function correctly, the government has to counter the flaws of capitalism, without hindering the market place, and provide a level playing field to insure competition as…

It’s the GOP Making the U.S. Look Weak Not Obama

Contrary to what weak assed FOX bimbos would have you believe, if anybody is making the U.S. look weak, it’s the GOP, not President Obama. Consider what the rest of the educated world sees through non-partisan eyes: On Sunday Senator Lindsey Graham went on CNN’s “State of the Union”, and claimed President Obama is “weak and…

Dismantling The Post Office and Americana: Corporatocracy

How could anyone have imagined the complete takeover of Americans’ lives and livelihoods  by a small group of wealthy individuals and a Corporatocracy that transferred everything in the public good to privatized entities for the benefit of a few? Herodotus, the ancient Greek historian, saw that inclement weather could not keep the mail from being…

The Extinction of the U.S. Middle Class via TPP

Of all the reasons to fear for the extinction of the American middle-class, The Trans-Pacific Partnership is the most foreboding menace since George W. Bush’s Crash of 2008 and the 2010 election of Tea Party “patriots”. Coincidence that Trans-Pacific Parntership and Tea Party Patriots share the same initials? hmmmmm.  There has been more news about…

GOP Freaks Over UAW & Union Revitalization In Tennessee

Republicans have made a living repeating one of their favorite bullshit mantras that says they want to get government out of business’ business. Evidently that saying only applies when a business isn’t against something they are against. In this case: Unions. Workers at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., are voting on whether or not…

Liberals Are Losing the War of Words

Liberals cannot bring themselves to admit that they’re losing the war of words to self-interested, crass, racists; but they are. Why aren’t liberals winning election after election even though the conservatives are on the wrong side of women’s’ rights, genetically modified foods, gun safety, job creation, destruction of the middle-class, the environment, and countless other…

Guess What GOP, the NFL is Quintessential Socialism

Although known as “America’s game”, the National Football League’s success has been built on the quintessential model of socialism. It has a salary cap which limits each team’s spending, a revenue-sharing system – effectively a tax – which transfers money from the high-earning franchises to the poorer teams and most interestingly of all, the NFL Draft. The…

America’s First Woman Fed Chairman Has a Lot on Her Plate

Today, February 1, 2014, Janet Yellen becomes the first woman to be Chair of the Federal Reserve Board in its 100-year history. She assumes her eminent position at a critical juncture, not only for the U.S. economy, but for the very survival of millions of its citizens. Immediate challenges of immeasurable importance – above all,…

Wendy Davis Becomes Focus of GOP War on Women

Wendy Davis has really pissed off the GOP. She’s strong-willed, intelligent, has strength of character, and worst of all, she’s blonde, attractive and doesn’t want to be Elisabeth Hasselbeck; sandwiched between two bitter old white men, sitting on a couch and disparaging anything of diversity in America on FOX “News”. How dare she? And she…

GOP Cuts in Unemployment Brings New Level of Misery for Millions

It galls me, especially having recently earned an MBA in Financial Economics (in my “spare time”) at an age well north of a half century, to see the United States let politicians, who know absolutely nothing macroeconomics– with nothing but a sick psychotic need to feed their superiority complex– let their own people starve and…

For Political Progress We Need Serious Action: By Us

If things are going to change for the better in this country, my fellow Dems and I need to take some some action, starting with refusing to believe that it’s enough to gripe about Republicans on social media. In my humble opinion, we’d better take a page out of our opponent’s playbook and quit talking…

Reagan’s GOP is Erecting its Own Caste System Berlin Wall

The United States is a country that the GOP has successfully divided the way the Berlin Wall divided Germany when it comes to its society, its economy, and its politics. It’s not Berlin yet, but it’s as close as the nearest brick. In fact, it seems obvious to me that now, more than ever, there…

Clarence Thomas and Judicial Ethics: Two Ships in the Night

As in so many other cases involving conservatives, they feel that laws, morals, codes of ethics, honesty and truth-telling is the sole province of other conservatives as to whom they apply. Case in point: Supreme Court justices are exempt from oversight under the federal judicial code of conduct, and it is left up to them…

GOP: Tis the Season to Screw the Unemployed

It’s very hard to not be disappointed with the consistently out-maneuvered Democrats in Congress especially given the level of callous pain the GOP is continuing to level on the unemployed masses of poor, minority, and/or females in America. This week’s budget agreement between Senate Budget Committee Chair Patty Murray, D-Wash., and House Budget Committee Chair…

Racism:The Real Reason GOP Wants Non-Whites Poor-Starving

I used to have the hardest time understanding why the GOP/Tea Party (they are one and the same now) want as many Americans as they can muster, uneducated, poor, and unhealthy. That is, until Barack Obama became President. It’s pretty clear that despite the cries of socialism, destroying the economy, the national debt, and on…

The Filibuster is Dead, Long Live the Filibuster

It came as no surprise to me that The Washington Post editorial page led the charge in denouncing the change in Senate filibuster rules that Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and 51 of his Democratic colleagues finally made on Thursday, November 21st, 2013. The king is dead, long live the king! is a traditional proclamation made following the accession…

We Are no Longer a Nation of People but of Corporations

The reason for the collapse of democratic choice is the foundation for so many American’s growing disenchantment with politics, is the unbridled growth in the  power of American corporations. J have wondered in print before if American corporations become sovereign countries within our own once-sovereign borders? Is this the hidden agenda behind Citizens United, the War…

It Turns Out the Tiffany Network is More Like Zales

I’ve been perusing the various respectable online news sources since last week’s on-air “apology” by Lara Logan of 60 Minutes. I mostly wanted to revel in the pronouncements about the lost credibility of 60 Minutes on account of it being duped by a source in its reporting on the Benghazi attack. I’m an ass like that. Ever…

If Merely Surviving is Touted as a Job Goal Has The GOP Won?

When survival is touted as a job goal, self-sacrifice becomes a virtue. These people– A lawyer, a computer scientist, a military analyst, and a teacher–have something in common that fifteen years ago would’ve been unimaginable; they are trained professionals, most with advanced degrees, who cannot find a full-time job. Since 2008, they have been tenuously employed –either working…

Add Veterans to GOP’s “Don’t Care” List With Women and Minorities

The recent government shutdown by the Republicans made it excruciatingly clear  that they don’t care about military veteran, active military or their families any more than they care about women or America’s underprivileged. Many Americans were tragically treated like pawns on a chessboard for the political ambitions of a handful of extremist Republican obstructionists. One…

Broadcast Media:A Failure of Both Journalism & Democracy

A free and fair media is what used to set America apart from all other “free” country wannabes. In a blatant display of the depths to which the U.S. media has sunk, U.S. news reports have been blaming the government shutdown on the inability of both political parties to come to terms. Supposedly, it was…

The Media Has Failed America As Badly As Republicans

Lost in all the political falderal for the last five years is the fact that teevee media “news” departments–once immune to budget constraints and concerned more with getting the truth to the American viewing public than ratings–have become farther from actual “truth-seekers” than professional wrestlers have become to the youngster participating in the sport you…

Stigmatize Those Who Cause the Pain, Not Those In Pain

No, got-dammit, this government shutdown is not like the one in 1995 because the middle-class is broker, and the got-damm Tea Party and so-called Libertarians now stigmatize the poor, and proclaim that if you are sick just die dammit, don’t bother me. Well I’m old enough to remember December 1995 when the United States government…

How Come Tea Partiers Aren’t Called Insurgents?

In many parts of the world — let’s say Egypt, for a familiar point of reference — members of an “irrational fringe” who tried to undermine the political system by overturning a law already confirmed by three branches of government would be called insurgents and their behavior would lead to arrest, prison or worse. Here?…

Income Inequality is Economic Incest

As surely as rape is about power, not sex, income inequality is about power, not money. Forcing women to have babies against their will is about power, not babies. Forcing women to have babies even if it endangers the mother is about absolute power. Controlling who can vote and who cannot is about power, not…

Billy Ray Valentine Teaches the GOP About Budget Ceilings

No doubt the Republicans think that they have President Obama and The Democrats between a rock and a hard place regarding the upcoming budget ceiling showdown. I would suggest that the House Republican Caucus call an immediate meeting to watch the 1983 film Trading Places before counting their eggs prior to their hatching. Aside from…

WHOA! Putin Bullshits Just Like A Republican!

I have to admit; I read Vladimir Putin’s New York Times op-ed with amazement; not so much at what he said, but how much he sounded like a typical Republican practicing the fine art of cognitive dissonance. Actually, George W. Bush was the first administration to fully utilize the fact that news cycles have become instantaneous.…

Syria: The Quintessential No-Win Predicament

High-level policy-making in the U.S. government is a big ole booger in and of itself, but the situation that President Obama finds himself is the Kobiyashi Marue of predicaments: it is literally a no-win predicament.  For those of you are not Star Trek fanatics, the Kobiyashi Maru was a Star Fleet training exercise which involved…

Are Opinions Now the Same as Facts?

Here’s my liberal beef for today; in America, we have all become accustomed to 24/7 access to information overload and sometimes that line between opinion and fact have become blurred, but the Tea Baggers Party has become so accustomed to their low-information base believing whatever their “Tokyo Roses” (Hannity, Limbaugh, O’Reilly, etc.) spew that they…

Are The Economic Elite Winning Against The 99%?

As much as it pains me to consider this, I have to ask myself; are the Economic Elite–who have benefited the most from American freedoms–winning the war against the 99%, the progressive alliance and its subsets of women, minorities, LGBT, and poor? Many points along the timeline in American history exhibit the divergence between the people…

Summers In Freddie & Fannie Out?WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot!

It’s not often that I have a totally different take on an issue from President Obama, but I strongly believe that he has gotten terrible advice on many economic issues, and most have the fingerprints of Larry Summers all over them.  Even more, Obama’s targeting of Fannie and Freddie for closure is part of a…

The REAL Reason Obamacare Scares Hell Out of the GOP

What is the REAL reason Obamacare scares the beejeezus out of the GOP? It was signed into law by the president in March 2010 and it survived a ruling by a clearly conservative, even activist Supreme Court.Yet their insane obsession with its dismantling rages on. Republicans and FOX continue to urge its repeal, with the…

Do Repeated Acts of Southern Treason Invite a 2nd Civil War?

150 years after the end of the US Civil War, the same Confederates and the federal government are poised for a rematch over the repeated acts of treason by states seeking to deny one of the most important founding tenets of democracy– voting rights– to black Americans, and ultimately over the fundamental rights of all…

ALEC Distracts Electorate From Economy, Jobs; Is It Too Late?

Even the most clueless Americans are beginning to look up from their smartphones and tablets and see the severe ideological crevasse that distinguishes progressives from conservatives, whether it’s on economics, morality, patriotism, or whatever the ALEC-controlled red-state legislatures can use to keep women, blacks and Hispanics in survival mode through either abortion or immigration standoffs.…

The GOP is Privatizing Our Country Into One Disaster After Another

With a single act, the GOP exposed the madness of privatizing every government agency they can possibly manage to squeak past voters in their insane quest to privatize the U.S. government. Private contractor-employed and mid-level computer analyst Edward Snowden went to China, handed over volumes of National Security Agency data—including surveillance, names of operatives and…

Truth: Ladies, The GOP Doesn’t Care If You’re Raped

Ladies, I’m sorry, but The Republican Party simply does not care if you are raped, beaten, have no health insurance, or even if you die needlessly in a hospital; you are as expendable as any other blockade to their obsessions and self-righteousness. The white male party simply considers you a throw-away commodity and considers their moral judgement…

Southern Distractions Divert Attention From Real Progress

OK, OK. You’ve all had a good time with Paula Deen and Wendy Davis–though those two southern women couldn’t be any more different than a fat, slobbering bulldog and a sleek Bengal tiger. Now, I have spent all but two years of my life in Mississippi. In a pinch, I can make some damn good fried chicken…

The GOP’s Descent Into Madness–And America’s Apartheid

Years from now historians are going to have a ball with the early 21st century aren’t they? As political upheavals go, some historians in the future might say the election (and re-election) of Barack Obama might be the most consequential event in America’s relatively short history. Some might point to the obvious lies, corruption, and robbery…

Edward Snowden is Irrelevant: Why He Had Access IS Relevant

Let’s be absolutely clear: Edward Snowden, the man, is absolutely irrelevant—Two questions are relevant: One question that’s relevant is why on earth did this person have access to data that could cause such damage—if indeed that’s even the truth?  Snowden will be hunted relentlessly and, when finally found, with glee, brought back to the US…

The Simple Question Tea Party / Libertarians Can’t Answer

Asking questions about the basics can occasionally catch anyone for a rare loss for words. With Tea Party darling Sarah Palin, when she was asked a simple question by Katie Couric, “What do you like to read?“, her lack of ability to be specific in her answer was the first glimpse into the barren wasteland of…

Patriots or Just Irrational Tea Party Paranoia?

There’s a fine line between healthy caution and paranoia. The U.S. has been under stress for over a decade and that always heightens emotions. When emotions are out of control logic flies out the window. Republicans have seized the opportunity to promote their failed brand of obstructionism and of all things, austerity. You can see it…

Opinions Are Like Butts Everybody Has One and Most Stink

Here’s my beef for today; in America, we have become so accustomed to 24/7 access to so much information that the line between opinion and fact have become one and the same for the least informed but biggest slice of our country. Hell yes everybody is entitled to their opinion, but like butts, everybody has…

This Recovery is NOT Real But Would You Like To Buy My House?

Americans—except Republicans of course– would really like to believe that the recovery is finally here. I mean, after five years of high unemployment, the GOP obsession with government deficits and a disappearing middle class, a bona fide recovery would make millions of Americans, as well as a faltering global economy, feel more at ease.  That’s…

Obama’s Watergate My Ass, Nobody Screws Up or Lies Like the GOP

This Liberal’s Beef right now has got to be the abject stupidity and short-term memory failure of anyone who thinks that Benghazi-gate, IRS-gate and AP-gate, even if stacked on top of one another and then super-sized, come close to the original “gate”; the Big Kahuna; the Mother Lode of “gates”; the “gate” of course being the obligatory suffix ever…

The Stupidest Congress Ever and We Put Them There

It takes a great deal of stupidity to call anything this Congress dishes out as the “stupidest”, but by gawd this bunch of idiots has managed to do just that; they are actually considering the stupidest law in the history of mankind.  The US Congress, its approval rating still near all-time lows, is reinforcing its own record…

Mr. Peabody Teaches Sherman About The Tea Party

“Hello again, Peabody here. “Sherman.”  “Yes Mr. Peabody.”  “Sherman, did I ever tell you about the time I went back to the year 2013 to determine what terrible affliction came over the United States of America and caused a catastrophic failure of an otherwise rapidly advancing, industrialized country?”  “Gee, no Mr. Peabody. It sounds awful.”…

The Tea Party Puppets and the Death of Compromise

My Liberal beef of the day? The GOP has allowed a minority of its own members, the so-called Tea Party, who are manipulated by the very wealthy to use them and their gullible ignorance to dictate party positions. For all of their political leaders’ tough talk, the Republicans have steadfastly refused to act responsibly as…

Budget “Austerians” And Deficit Hawks Won’t Face The Facts

Today’s Liberal Beef?  It staggers my imagination to think of how much more solid the U.S. economy’s recovery would be if not for the damned “austerians”, or Tea partiers as they prefer to be labeled—and boy do they LOVE labels– were not such suckers for the panderers and deficit-obsessed. According to the latest forecasts, both…

Why Do Americans Continue to Believe GOP Bullshit?

Today’s Liberal Beef? Why do Americans continue to believe such bullshit from their GOP politicians? It appears that the Reinhart-Rogoff battles over their faulty data about government debt have flamed out. Even the inventors of the 90% debt cliff are now anxious to portray themselves of cautious supporters of expansionary fiscal policy. This should mean that sober policy types…

Student Debt Not National Debt is Crushing The Recovery

For all the talk from the GOP about their fear that our national debt will crush the younger generation under the weight of our American “credit card” debt, the truth is–and has been since the crash during the waning George W. Bush’s disastrous Presidency– the lack of a vibrant economy and the jobs that come with…

The Reason You Feel Like You’re Making Less Income? You Are

If you’re like me and it feels like you’re working harder and making less these days, there’s a very good reason for that. You are. Wages of working Americans– just like the overall effect of government cuts during an extremely fragile recovery–are being wrung out like an old wash rag; and it’s accommodating our economy’s…

Is the Sun Setting On the U.S. Middle-Class?

You have to hand it to Americans; despite inexorable proof to the contrary, a surprisingly large number of them refuse to admit that the sun is setting on the middle class. Now, that’s not just HGtransecon’s  observation. It’s also the implied, if not stated conclusion of a very recent Heartland Monitor poll, which is conducted…

Panic Must Be Rampant Among Gold Worshiping Paulites

I’m 100% positive that the ongoing precipitous fall in gold’s lustrous shine will not sway the belief of loyal, but simple-minded Paulites that the Gold Standard is still preferable to the current monetary mechanism of fiat currency. Neither will the believers that the moon landing was a hoax ever believe that Neil Young and Buzz…

What Congress Does Best-Nothing

Despite widespread fears that dramatic budget changes would wreck an already fragile recovery, Congress unsurprisingly decided not to stray from their recent modus operandi and do what they do best– which became exponentially more prevalent since the current substandard Supreme Court decided to let corporate billions subvert the democratic process via the inexplicable ruling in…

The Sequestor is an Economy-Killing Python

The greatest single crisis ever of capitalism, the Great Depression of the 1930s, did not have the benefit of the mountains of evidence that we have now…that The Sequestor is an Economy-Killing snake that kills by the methods of a python, not a viper.    In the over 250-year-old history of modern capitalism, the economic output…

Don’t Get Too Excited About February’s Unemployment Drop

More than five years after George W. Bush’s economic crash, it apparently doesn’t take much to get people excited about the state of unemployment. The Labor Department’s February employment report showing the economy generated a better than expected 236,000 jobs and the unemployment rate had fallen 0.2 percentage points to 7.7% was sufficient to get the optimists’…

Same Mistakes Being Made Now That Caused The Great Depression

By embracing the gratuitous anti-government rhetoric and archaic economic theorizing that passes for policy analysis in much of today’s G.O.P., Congress and the White House might be making the same mistake that F.D.R.’s Administration made in 1937, when it brought on another recession. And Fed Chairman Bernanke, a much-ballyhooed expert on the Great Depression has,…

Why the GOP Congress Doesn’t Care What You Think

Embracing the gratuitous anti-government rhetoric and archaic economic theorizing that passes for policy analysis in much of today’s G.O.P., Congress and the White House might be making the same mistake that F.D.R.’s Administration made in 1937, when it brought on another recession that led to the Great Depression. And Fed Chairman Bernanke has, on many…

The GOP Bankrupted the Postal Service On Purpose

Not surprisingly, the GOP with their ever-larger bag of dirty tricks, is the reason The United States Postal Service recently announced that it is cutting Saturday delivery starting in August, moving to a five-day schedule as part of a multiyear effort to reduce costs and remain viable. And that’s not the only change coming down in 2013.…

Confederates & Republicans 1776-2013

The Confederate Republicans have never stopped believing “they was robbed”, and I don’t mean the Confederates from the 1860s; I think it’s worth remembering that the failure of the Articles of Confederation, [the first Constitution]whose principles (weak central government, inability to collect taxes and lacking adequate defenses against hostile countries,) were formulated while The Colonies were still…

Lobbyists-The Political Mafia

What our economy needs is a friendlier environment to the kind of entrepreneurial risk-taking that has always been America’s trump card over all other countries; which means getting the Mafia of modern politics–lobbyists and their corrupting big money–out of Washington. Monopolies bring power and money. It happened during prohibition, it happened before the Great Depression,…

The 1930s Recession Could Return as Soon as This Friday

The sharp decline from the 3.1 percent growth in the previous quarter to the contraction by 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter has not as yet lead to widespread fears that the United States is about to enter another recession. Not yet anyway. But given that much of the cause of the decline can be…

Boom or Bust: All Economic Indicators Say It’s Time to Choose

Every reliable economic indicator available shows that the U.S is poised for either an economic boom, the likes we haven’t see in decades, or a total collapse back into the financial and unemployment quagmire of another recession. And there only a few things in the position to tip the course of the next few decades…

Republicans Continue to Lie About the Economy

Boy, Republicans tell a lot of lies, but the biggest is the Republican’s economic lie. According to Senate’s #1 Republican, the budget deficit is “the transcendent issue of our time.” Of course this is the same man who also proclaimed that his primary goal for the United States Senate–despite the country being in the worst…

How Long Will America Endure This GOP Economic Rollercoaster?

I have to wonder just how long the GOP can keep taking America on this economic rollercoaster before we all lose our breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Everywhere you turn, it seems, there is an economic contradiction.  Economists fall back on the stock and trade of their vocation, mathematics. They have been tied in knots resorting to indicating…

Ronald Reagan Would Not Be Welcome By GOP Today

Pro-Gun Safety, Pro Tax-Increasing, Pro Borrow-and-Spend Ronald Reagan would be no more welcome in today’s GOP than Jesus would be welcome in the elaborate, tax-exempt evangelical compounds where wealthy televangelists exploit the elderly, the frightened, the sick and the plain old suckers that follow them. And one of the most infuriating aspects to GOP lies today is that Ronald…

Neo-Luddites Dragging Down Demand and Recovery

If only the Neo-Luddites in the U.S. would get their heads out of their rear-ends and stop dragging the U.S. economy down, our economic recovery would have a very good chance of staging a remarkable comeback. Lord knows that  the people of the eurozone are doing their part. Even facing  severely ill-timed austerity measures, I have to say that I’m surprised…

The Right’s Inflation Boogey-Man Is Fake

One of the most interesting “boogey-men” used by the far right is inflation. We are constantly bombarded by the fear of inflation if we don’t stop all this “runaway spending on the poor and elderly”. What a crock. As is their modus operandi, The Tea Party and its propaganda arm, FOX Noise, is constantly fear-mongering…

Economists Say Republicans Not Debt Threaten Recovery–Again

Just two weeks after Congress negotiated a last-minute deal to avert going over the fiscal cliff, economists say political roadblocks by Republicans, who have gotten hammered lately, are again throwing tantrums over the nation’s borrowing limit and could once again threaten to cause grave harm  the nation’s sluggish recovery and 99 percent of Americans’ well…

Conservatives’ “Misconceptions” About the Deficit and Debt

One huge misconception among low-information (read:red-state) citizens is the argument that the government’s debt (public debt) is similar to a business loan, private loan or credit card (private debt). The standard argument is something like, “If we keep running up debt, we’ll eventually be overcome with interest costs, suffer a reduced standard of living, hyper-inflation!…

Is This Any Way To Run A Superpower?

Fiscal Cliffs, debt ceilings, trillion dollar coins, oh my. Is this any way to run a superpower? Not no, but hell no. If you feel like you’ve become nothing more than a ball of silly putty being twisted, stretched, shaped, and molded only to be wadded up, wiped out and started all over again for…

Fiscal Cliff Was Just Another Gift to Corporate America

The real story of the fiscal cliff negotiations, and the coming debt ceiling debate, is a continuing tale of corporate America tax cuts and the CEOs who love them. The abject hypocrisy over deficits can be illustrated with one simple statistic. According to the Institute for Policy Studies, 25 of the most-well-paid chief executives got…

Fiscal Cliff Was Latest Failed Deficit Gimmick

For most of my adult life, the United States has been saying that the national debt is something we HAVE to DEAL WITH!!!! Forty years is a long time for the biggest, baddest country on earth to fail at something. Why have we failed? Because it’s really just a political ruse (Is there any other…

GOP Obstructionism–Will 2012 End the Way It Began?

Largely due to GOP obstructionism, 2012 will hobble to a close and end the same way it began; with a widening chasm between far-flung perceived economic gloom and the real economic conditions being experienced in the U.S. Despite growing consumer confidence after President Obama’s resounding victory, it slipped back into uncertainty and frustration in December,…

Myth-busting The Federal Reserve

There is a subset of macro-economics (governmental economics as opposed to micro-economics which pertains to business and individuals) that is by far the most misunderstood, mis-reported, and blamed unfairly(mostly by the GOP)—The Federal Reserve System; it’s time to do some myth-busting. By giving in to participating on social networking sites like Twitter, LiveNewsChat, Facebook, etc., I…

GOP Clamors To Reduce All Budgets Except Defense and Their Own

Republicans, clamoring to reduce everyone’s budgets except Defense and their own staff budgets, is profoundly disturbing in many ways. Most disturbing of all is that since taking control of the House in 2010 they have worked fewer days than any Congresses in our history. This can be expressed in terms that my generations’ parents used,…

It Pains Me To Say It: Republicans Are Just Cowards

What has happened to the Republican Party? There is just no other way to say it. Republicans have become cowards in the truest sense of the word. They’re scared little children who are crying, lying, and throwing tantrums (literally) every single time they can’t bully the President or their propaganda arm-FOX “News”- can’t convince their…

Unions Drive A Healthy Middle Class And Robust Growth

Contrary to Michigan’s Governor’s claims, economists have been concluding that the wealthiest Americans spend a smaller share of their income than their middle-class counterparts. And reputable economists understand that unions provide the fuel for a stable middle class and economic growth. This means that as income disparity widens, economic demand wanes proportionately. Whether the middle…

Months To Recession But Obama Must Hang Tough On Cliff

If lawmakers do nothing, America faces fiscal tightening in 2013 worth up to 5% of GDP. That is a Greek-scale squeeze. No, it would not take many months for it to push the country into recession. But hopefully it won’t come to that and, conceivably, it could very well be the only way to Bring…

Chained CPI: The Newest GOP Trick To Screw The Elderly

Politicians who insist on cutting the deficit have to find ways to cut spending or raise taxes that don’t look like they’re raising taxes. The newest, most popular tactic to this end, is adopting “chained CPI” which is merely a new way to screw the elderly for the benefit of the rich. And you thought there…

Congress Obviously Can Not Fix The Economic Crisis

I’ve been reading an excellent work, The Mess We’re In: Why Politicians Can’t Fix Financial Crises by Guy Fraser Sampson. The answer, to put it briefly is: “because they caused them”. One of the foundations of this excellent book is what I’ve also thought, and said, many times. That is, “within a Western democratic system,…

GOP Is Sure To Throw Debt Ceiling Tantrum-So Let’s Just End It

Must Republicans abuse every basic standard of humanity regardless of who it hurts  just so they can notch a “win”? We all know that Republicans are going to throw their newest hissy-fit using the debt ceiling; so let’s end what was intended to be nothing more than a parliamentary procedure once and for all. The…

Fiscal Cliff? Media Myth

Soledad O’Brien is the best “news” interviewer on television today. Why? She’s the only one who makes politicians answer the questions that she asks while the rest of the televised media cowtow to the corporate brass. The First Amendment was NOT intended to protect media news with characteristics of professional wrestling that insist on furthering…

Beware the Undead Zombie lil Grover Norquist

Anybody who thinks lil Grover Norquist is down and out hasn’t seen a zombie movie. You know the ones. Just when you think the evil zombie who has been biting young blondes’ legs off is finally dead, the hero begins to stand up from the supposedly-once-and-for-all dead zombie, it reaches up, grabs hero-boy by his…

Republicans Are Wrong on the Economy and Worse They Know It

Republicans are wrong…and worse, they know they’re wrong and don’t care as long as they get what they want. Power. According to the “experts” in the Republican Party–who haven’t reduced a single deficit or lowered the debt a single dollar since Calvin Coolidge (1923-1929)–if we’ll just avoid the fiscal cliff and make major reductions in…

Wrong Time to Feel Politics is Irrelevant

To many people politics has come to be irrelevant and is considered to be more about ideological issues than about making our lives better. And that is a shame. America’s middle class is agitated, angry, and/or weary of political theater and of confrontation that has little to do with the challenges the nation faces. Ironically,…

Voters Should Do More Than Just Vote

If the last two years have taught me anything, it’s that the voting public in the U.S. should do more than just vote. I hate to be the buzz-kill at the party, but that simply isn’t enough. Going to work, coming home, raising kids, setting good examples, etc., are not acts of heroism. It’s the…

GOP Politics and Global Economy Still Threaten U.S. Recovery

The politics of GOP obstructionism and the continued contraction of most of the global economy make President Obama’s odds of growing the U.S. GDP and creating jobs that will lead to a sustained recovery all the more challenging. Fiscal Cliff or not, we have a real sticky wicket on our hands no matter what else…

RIP Twinkies

At the end of last week, Hostess announced plans to wind down its business operations, shut its factories and lay off some 18,500 employees. Even in boom times, this would be bad news. Over time, it seems likely that some of its iconic brands may be revived but, for now, a large number of people…

The GOP’s Deficit Boogey Man

The GOP is still pitching invisible boogeymen to voters, and the biggest, baddest boogeyman since President Obama took office, albeit never before then, has been the federal deficit. Why is it that some people are inherently more inclined to believe in what is not right there in front of them, than what is? England was…

“I Pity the Fool” That Obstructs Avoiding The “Fiscal Cliff”

To quote a well-known, prudent, compassionate scholar from the 1980s, “I Pity the Fool” who obstructs a mutual and effective collaboration in avoiding the “fiscal cliff”, come the 2014 elections. It is painfully obvious that the large majority of the American electorate wants cooperation, not confrontation, in Washington so that we can finally make some…

Mounting Evidence GOP Spending Cuts Are Recovery-Killers

As if any more evidence was needed to prove that drastic U.S. spending cuts is a recovery-killer, the euro zone debt crisis dragged the bloc into its second recession since 2009 in the third quarter despite modest growth in Germany and France, data showed on Thursday. Two quarters of contraction put the euro zone’s 9.4…

Please Mr. President: No More Wall Street Whiners

I see President Obama’s victory as one not just for himself and principles of Democrats, but renewed hope that he has come to understand macroeconomics. Given that most voters do not understand the economics of fiscal multipliers, bank recapitalization, or quantitative easing, they seem to have understood enough to reject the Republican narrative that fiscal…

It’s Economics, Not Demographics, Stupid

Republicans are preoccupied in some uncharacteristic public “soul-searching,” which is what people call members of a defeated party explaining that the party went haywire by not taking the advice they’ve been given all along. To paraphrase Bill Clinton, It’s Economics, Demographics, Stupid. Most arguments center on the consensus that demography spelled doom for Republicans. The…

A Statistical Reason Romney Lost a “Sure Thing” Election

Lost among the “news” stories, following the 2012 election, the tale of Mitt Romney’s loss among Hispanic voters was on the front pages of New York Times and Washington Post, but there are clear and statistical reasons. Aside from the bubble that Republicans were living in where they even thought that if they just made…

GOP Wanting Less Regulation is Like Crooks Wanting Fewer Cops

Time for the truth; Republicans’ long-held mantra of less regulation is like crooks wanting fewer cops. Duh! I mean come on! I have de-bunked ever single theory, implication & assertion, and plugged every nook and cranny from which this crock of bat-crap crazy reasoning has oozed from the GOP since Ronald Reagan. BARACK OBAMA will…

Final Thoughts On The 2012 Election

Even though my forte is macroeconomics, what works and why, I’ve spent a lot of time lately analyzing politics, what works and why. These are my final thoughts on the 2012 election. So I’m not going to waste a lot of time and effort on what could very well be an approaching Republican civil war.…

The Free World (Not Just Dems)Fears Amoral GOP Policies

In most of my research involving economics around the world, one item became clear very early in this election cycle-not only Democrats fear GOP amoral, unprincipled policies. The rest of the civilized world has a lot riding on the US election, and actually fears Republican economic policies. We Americans should be in control of our…

The Fiscal Cliff: I Say Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained

There used to be a saying when I was younger, stronger, smarter, and had more stamina that went something like, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” I think what we’re going to see post-election would be better to consider as, “Nothing Done, And Your Ass is Mine!” In the immediate aftermath of what, by most accounts, is…

Will U.S. Economic Recovery Be Too Late for Obama?

There is no doubt that the economy is slowly recovering, despite every roadblock the GOP could muster, but will the U.S. economic recovery be too late for President Obama? If so, that would be a real shame. Newly released gross domestic product estimates show the economy growing at 2 percent in the third quarter, up from 1.3…

What the Hell Has Happened to Our Democracy?

In conducting research for most of what I write, I correspond with many people well-read in economics and politics. And thanks to the internet, many of them are from other countries. Not surprisingly, the question I’m most often asked is “What the hell has happened to your democracy? The Republican Party seems to be dishonest,…

I’m Relinquishing My Dream of a Wall Street Perp-Walk

I suppose by now I should give up my dream of seeing Wall Street Executives responsible, at least in part, for the 2008 financial crisis wearing orange jumpsuits with their hands cuffed in chains around their waste and doing the “penguin-shuffle” perp-walk from the courthouse to an awaiting Department Of Corrections transport van. But is…

The Fiscal Cliff: I’m Ready For The Ride

The political arena is finally heating up beyond the land of debate prep. The “fiscal cliff” – what some call a pending economic calamity that is happening outside the bubble of the circus that has become American elections — is drawing closer, and analysts have already begun talking about the specific ways in which it…

Say Goodbye to Democracy If SuperPacs Succeed

Uber-Wealthy contributors behind right-wing campaign ads are after more than just victory in November. They’re trying to permanently reshape the political landscape–to change America from a Democracy into little more than a huge  banana republic; with a willing, complicit media. How else can we possibly explain what is happening before our eyes? We know that…

Choosing A President Has Made Us All Batcrap Crazy

What Americans allow themselves to be put through to choose a president, or any elected office it seems, is, to coin a cable pundit, batcrap crazy. The insane machinations Americans put themselves through to elect governing officials in general, and presidents specifically, has become an odd embodiment of some twisted manifest destiny of entertainment/politics/professional wrestling.…

GOP Win Means More 9/11, War, Economic Collapse, Class Warfare

It amazes me how short the memories of American voters can be. Aside from 9/11, the unnecessary Iraq War, the botched response to Katrina, Enron, WorldCom and the Great Recession of 2008, (all of which happened during the last Republican administration), Class Warfare on Unions, Women, Minorities, etc., all seem to be from another era;…

Unemployment Rates: More GOP Fuzzy Math Exposed

Now that the falderal surrounding last week’s unemployment report has died down, we can again disprove the fuzzy math that leads brainiacs like Joe Scarborough, JacK Welch, and the FOX Propaganda Network use to justify their paranoid conspiracies when actual arithmetic was the dastardly culprit. Aside from it being another example of conservatives either not being…

Say it With Me-Release the Biden!!

“Release the Biden” has been the phrase bouncing around in my head for weeks. Honestly, it’s been growing exponentially louder lately. Even as I watched brilliant orator, President Barack Obama, energize campaign crowds, I kept hearing a little voice in my head saying, “I wonder if President Obama is a better debater than he was…

Hyper Partisanship Means Not Learning From Our Mistakes

The U.S. has become a victim of one of the most common dalliances in the history of the world; not learning from its mistakes. That’s what hyper partisanship will do to a nation. That’s what hyper partisanship is doing to this country. It’s a huge diversion and it keeps the country from learning from its…

Bad Medicine is Killing the Economy

Bad medicine is killing the economy. As I have said before, allowing political ideology, politicians, pundits, and a.m. radio hosts influence or dictate economic policy for the U.S. is absolute folly. Let me go one step further. It’s like having a someone who reads WEBMD prescribe medicine; what we’ve been doing is letting that person…

Monetary Policy Helps But Conservative Policy Would Destroy America

Central banks on both sides of the Atlantic took extraordinary monetary policy measures in September, but Republican policies would destroy any chance of America regaining it’s once-lofty status. The long awaited “QE3” (the third dose of quantitative easing by the United States Federal Reserve), and the European Central Bank‘s announcement that it will purchase unlimited…

Jack Welch and FOX NEWS: Paragons of Misinformation

The September jobs report, which revealed a surprising drop in the unemployment rate, immediately provoked conspiracy theories among the Obama administration’s critics. Former General Electric chief Jack Welch and FOX NEWS, paragons of skewed and biased opinions, have added conspiracy and misinformation to their proud resumes. This past Friday, October 5th, and kicked off the…

Idea: Put Economics Back Into Debate on Economy

There is significant agreement among conventional economists, including those from  both the left and right, on most key macroeconomic issues. But watching Republicans and Democrats constantly go after one another in public over economic theories reminds me of the theatrics of “professional wrestling”.  It’s easy to  assume that there’s a world of difference in their…

Do Not Believe Romney or GOP Will Lower Your Taxes

I don’t have any way of knowing whether or not you believe Mitt Romney will lower your taxes, but there is no way in hell that I believe he will lower my taxes. Despite being a white, southern, working-class, male voter, Mitt Romney really only has one thing to offer me in exchange for my vote;…

We Can Still Fix This Broken Economy

~~~UPDATE FROM EARLIER POSTING~~~ Repairing the broken economy would be an easy homework assignment for any sober, realistic economist. We can fix this broken economy but we desperately need for Congress to grow up. The main problem with the U.S. economy is the intrusion of politicians where they don’t belong. Politicians are simply not equipped to search for,…
Romney and Republicans Have Only Scorn for Average Americans
Unless you’ve been living in a coma for the past week, you are aware that Mitt Romney holds a deep and abiding scorn for American workers and those who represent their interest. Long a suspicion regarding the wealthy like Mr. Romney, when he was speaking to donors in Boca Raton, he confirmed in no uncertain…
The Fiscal Cliff Looms On the Horizon
No matter who wins on November 6th, they’ll be staring down the barrel of the “Fiscal Cliff” and sequestration. For those of you who have avoided the political circus, you might want to know a little about what happens on January 1, 2013 if no agreement is reached on the budget control act and how…
The U.S. Economy: What Happens on November 7th, 2012?
 Since it’s election time, with all the expected bickering, shouting, blaming and finger-pointing that comes with it, my question is this: regardless of who wins, what happens on November 7th? A few weeks ago, I wrote an article showing in very clear detail illustrating that the GOP campaigns going back over a generation have not…
Romney’s Economic Plan–Shhh It’s Not Really His
The reason Mitt Romney’s 5-Point Plan sounds familiar is because it’s not really his;  the GOP Economic Plan hasn’t changed in 30 years, regardless of the economic conditions.  Throughout the Republican “preliminaries” I kept getting the feeling that I had heard most of what the candidates were saying before. Turns out I’ve heard Mr. Romney’s…
Citizens United-The Destruction of Our Democracy : Part 1
Having witnessed the current cycle political campaigns more closely than i normally would, (and with the dog and pony shows known as political conventions thankfully over) we are in the home stretch of this year’s election cycle. As such, I’d like to address one, Citizens United, of two (the other is voter suppression in a…
GOP Out to Destroy the Last Defense To Economic Disaster
Mounting politically-motivated threats of interference from the  Republican Party on the Federal Reserve endangers the central bank’s independence and undermines confidence in the nearly century-year old institution that represents the last hurdle to another Great Depression. Having witnessed over the last 30+ years the Republican Party’s methodical roll-back of safeguards erected after the Great Depression,…
Political Conventions Are Needless Spectacles While Serious Problems Loom
As Americans’ ADHD turns to the ratings-driven, needless spectacles of the national political party conventions (the almost perfect characterization of a Dog and Pony Show) serious economic factors loom with impending ramifications to the U.S. completely lost on 75% of the American public. The recession in Europe, particularly Spain and the UK, grew stronger in…
Tampa Is Ground Zero for the Real Class Warfare
Republicans gather this week in Tampa, to nominate Mitt Romney for president. This is GroundZero for the real class warfare being waged in America. No more “quiet rooms” where Romney says taxes should be discussed. They will ruminate endlessly over how to change the national mood toward the absolute necessity of limited government, individual liberties and free markets.…
Romney: Myths, the Misses, and Impossible Mathematics
Frankly, I’m rather tired of the whole “Show me your tax returns” sideshow that has taken place lately. The problem with Mr. Romney is the same problem that occurred while George Bush was in office. There are just so many myths (Bane-when did he leave?), the misses (Mrs. Romney), and impossible mathematics (tax policy) taking…
Romney-Ryan is “Trickle-Down on Steroids”
As I have said many times, economic policy and its effectiveness is all about timing and implementation. The Romney-Ryan Plan meets neither criteria. “Trickle-down” was an utter failure for President Reagan and the Romney-Ryan Plan is “Trickle-Down” on steroids”. Economies are never static. They have natural ebbs and flows. To be successful over the long…
We Can Still Repair This Broken Economy
Repairing the broken economy would be an easy homework assignment for any sober, realistic economist. We can fix this broken economy but we desperately need Congress to grow up. The main problem with the U.S. economy is the intrusion of politicians where they don’t belong. Politicians are simply not equipped to search for, much less implement solutions.…
The Latest Bank Corruption Scandal Aids Iran
In the latest of a growing list of bank corruption scandals, foreign banks, until 2008 were allowed to transfer money for Iranian clients through their American subsidiaries to a separate offshore institution. In the so-called U-turn transactions, Standard Chartered Bank (an international banking groups with offices in 70 countries) claims to have only had to provide…
Don’t Be Fooled-There is an Easy Fix to Social Security
Social Security can be fixed. Easily. But the truth of the matter is that Social Security shouldn’t need fixing. The Social Security Trust Fund should currently have $2.5 trillion in surplus. But as in many such cases, Republicans have rewritten history to curry favor with their current base; even promulgating blatant lies about their own…
Romney Tax Stances Just Don’t Add Up
It’s no wonder Mitt Romney’s tax plan sounds so similar in tone to his steadfast refusals to release his tax returns; nothing about any of the Romney tax stances add up. The reason he steadfastly refuses to release his personal tax returns is easy. With as much damage as they’re doing to his campaign, there…
One Set of Rules For Big Business; Another for Everyone Else
If you don’t believe that there is one set of rules, laws, regulations and consequences for big business, big investors or big banks, and another set for everyone else, I would REALLY like to sell you some prime farm land in the middle of the Mississippi River. Yesterday’s Knoxville News (Tennessee) ran a story about a…
Are WE Really Looking At A Four-Corner Campaign for President ?
The U.S is suffering through the worst economy since the Great Depression and candidates for both political parties have decided, simultaneously, to play a Four-Corner Campaign Offense.  Forget about a “grand idea” for how to get us out of this self-inflicted gaping wound of an economy. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent, and…
UK & EuroZone Deep Recessions Spell Disaster for U.S. Under GOP
The UK’s double-dip recession has deepened sharply and unexpectedly in the second quarter leaving their economies smaller than they were when conservative governments took office. With the entire Euro Zone in recession,(Spain and Greece already in Depression territory),China building enormous inventories of everything from steel ($500 billion and counting) to snow globes, and now England…
Treasury’s Failures Bear Partial Blame for Weak Recovery
The Department of Treasury’s abject failure to keep its promises regarding the 2008 financial crisis is at least partially to blame for the weakness of the recovery; most notably its failure to scale back the size and complexity of Wall St. banks and its promise to use part of  TARP to “preserve homeownership.” The Home Affordable…
London / Wall St. Competing for Least Trusted Financial Center
London and Wall St. are apparently competing for the position of most disliked and least trusted multi-national financial center. Unfortunately, one after another banking scandal is getting almost no airplay in the U.S. at a time when a large portion of the population is struggling just to stay above water. In the latest example of banksters…
Facing the Truth that America Has Lost its Ethics is Painful
Facing up to the truth that America has lost its core ethics is painful, but true nonetheless. Evidence? One after another bank scandal in which no one is held accountable-much less punished The total evisceration of GOP political morals and The accelerating extinction of the once-mighty, but now endangered American middle-class By any standard of…
LIBOR: THE CULMINATION OF DECADES OF DISASTROUS DE-REGULATION
The LIBOR scandal that has overwhelmed London in the past week is now splashing onto America’s shores, and is the culmination of decades of disastrous de-regulation. It’s negative effects on the economy CAN NOT be overemphasized.  AUTHOR’S NOTE: And what did network “news” focus on last week for two days? Whether the Affordable Care Act…
LIBOR: Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Go Back To Your Bank…
Just when you thought it was safe to go back to your banks, this newest banking scandal, involving LIBOR, explodes. LIBOR (short for London Interbank Offered Rate) Abuse is essentially a fancy term for massive inside trading; quite possibly more harmful, more insidious, and more unfair than 10 housing bubbles. Scary? You bet. Does anybody…
Network News Divisions are Complicit in the U.S. Financial Crisis
News divisions used to be cost centers funded by entertainment divisions and the advertising that sponsored entertainment. Not anymore. All five of the Networks below reported on the earth-shattering “news” that “Katie is leaving Tom”, but not how perilously close we are to economic meltdown. Why? Economic meltdowns aren’t sexy. This makes the once-respectable and…
Will Anyone Stop This Runaway Train To Great Depression 2.0?
Apparently, The Federal Reserve, the U.S. Congress, the European Central Bank, Germany, France, even China and Russia, have all decided that avoiding the runaway train that is the coming economic catastrophe is somebody else’s responsibility. As much as I hate to admit it, it appears to me that the party is over. The runaway freight…
The Affordable Care Act has Republican Roots
“Just because a couple people on the Supreme Court declare something to be ‘constitutional’ does not make it so”-Rand Paul, (R) Kentucky Despite the obvious idiocy of the statement above, the Affordable Care Act has roots in recent Republican history as a cause for many a Republican’s wet dream…unless of course it has President Obama’s…
The Difference Between the GOP and Democrats
The fundamental difference between the way the GOP and Democrats think boils down to the answer to one single question: who bears the cost of prior governing mistakes? From the years I spent working for Fortune 500 companies or large law firms, I learned that the one thing they have in common is a basic…
Myth-Busting: GOP Lies On the Deficit and Spending
Republicans repeatedly place the blame for both the size of the national deficit and an “extraordinary” growth in spending at the feet of President Obama, but nothing could be farther from the truth on either point. Of all the onerous lies, the GOP and GOP supporters repeat, this one is the most often because they…
THE ONE PENNY SOLUTION TO AMERICA’S FINANCIAL CRISIS
Purpose   To implement an effective and immediate surcharge on all transactions of a financial nature including goods and services non-wholesale in nature, to serve as the basis for a plan of action to reduce the national deficit of the United States of America without interfering with the normal flow of governmental business nor placing…
Will Judicial Activism Kill The ACA (and Untold Americans)?
Consensus, aided and abetted by a ratings-driven, corporate media, says that a conservative majority that has perfected judicial activism on the Supreme Court of the United States has become just another cog in a larger right-wing wheel to make progressive economic and legislative victories a thing of the past. However, consensus seems that the Supreme…
Lies About Obama’s Economy Republicans Love To Tell
  I realize that nothing unites Republicans, especially ego-maniacal blowhards like Joe Scarborough at MSNBC, (who spent the first 30 minutes of his show bellowing about “this President’s spending on” [insert your favorite Republican Talking Point here]) quite like the unshakable belief that Barack Obama has been unable to stop himself from squandering “ridiculous” sums…
GOP Austerity Gobbledegook De-bunked: Again!
If the majority of U.S. voters are stupid enough to buy into the GOP economic austerity gobbledegook and swallow their crazy, backwards, delusional, cockamamie economic theories, we deserve another Great Depression. I hate to admit it, but my dad may have been correct. He always told me that people generally get what they deserve. Last…
The GOP is Turning The American Dream Into A Nightmare
In my lifetime, The GOP has turned the “American Dream” from a badge of honor for our country into a cruel joke. Like a schoolyard bully, they’ve taken the carrot dangling in front of our faces that was an incentive to work harder and move forward and are holding it in the air, out of…
Must The GOP Always Use Fuzzy Math?
Once a discussion of Austerity vs Stimulus economics begins it’s clear that for either to work properly, it must be implemented in the same balanced manner as a math equation. Both sides of an equations, regardless of layout, format, methodology, or complexity. One plus one not just does equal two, one plus one MUST equal…
The Cure for the Republican Economic Bird Flu
The Republicans/Conservatives have infected the global economy with an economic bird flu crisis. Luckily there is a cure. The type of economic crisis that we are in consists of two distinct stages. We are now in the second and increasingly lethal  stage. This crisis is global in its scale and degree of its reach. It…
GOP Myths On The Economy
Myths seem to abound whenever economics is the issue. Below is a serious attempt at debunking some of the more prevalent bumper-sticker, no-basis-in-fact myths promulgated by the GOP. These are the most-often misquoted myths by conservatives who have brain-washed the masses who depend upon such economic intellectual giants like Joe Scarborough, Sean Hannity, and Rush…
Debt Ceiling Part Two: Economic Disruption Is GOP Goal
John Boehner, the leader of the House Republicans, has promised yet another fight with the White House over the debt ceiling. The euro zone is in deep economic trouble. The red-hot economy in China is slowing…quickly. The Federal Reserve is wavering. Yet, the biggest threat to the emerging U.S. economic recovery may be the obstructionism…
Austerity: The Real Euro Crisis Begins in Spain
For months, I’ve tried to explain that the real reason for concern regarding the euro is Spain, not Greece. Greece is largely symbolic; and easy fodder for conservatives to make a false equivalency between the poor in the U.S. and the “lazy Greeks”. In spite of all the baseless claims and bumper-sticker slogans tossed around…
Conservatism and Great Depression 2.0
So you think another Great Depression is unthinkable? Over the next days / weeks / months you will hear many times that Greece will / will not exit the euro and what it will mean to the U.S. and the world economy. In either of the scenarios, it will be disastrous. But I’m here to…
Do Not Believe the GOP: Social Security Is Running A Surplus
Adding yet another BIG LIE to the GOPs expanding list: Social Security actually added a $69 billion(with a “B”) SURPLUS in 2010 and $95 billion to its surplus in 2011 according to the 2011 Social Security Board of Trustees Annual Report. So, 2011’s net gain brings the Total Social Security Surplus at the End of…
Don’t Be Fooled-The GOP is Anti Capitalism
Capitalism is not perfect and is vulnerable to both human nature and some major flaws that have flourished since the Presidency of Ronald Reagan. In order for true Capitalism to function correctly, the government has to counter the flaws of capitalism, without hindering the market place, and provide a level playing field to insure competition…
Strange Bedfellows Make 2012 Elections Unpredictable: Op-Ed
Occasionally, I “go off the rails” and want to freestyle some thought processes other than economics. Hence, the “Trans” (going beyond) in Transecon. This is one of those times. The world economy is damned fragile at the moment. France and Greece shook things up a bit with their recent elections. Germany’s unpredictable response to their…
Stop the GOP Assault on the U.S. Economic Future
The GOP is assaulting the U.S. economic future along with women in general, Hispanics, civil liberties, education, and anything else the Koch Brothers might feel could interfere with their desire to own America. It’s time for the American electorate to stop listening to television “news organizations” that are more interested in stirring emotions and ratings…
It’s The Income Inequality Stupid!
Before the late 1970s, few economists in the United States gave much thought to the idea of economic inequality. In fact, it was hardly mentioned at all. However, as conditions have changed in the last 30 years, the incomes of the nation’s wealthiest 1 percent have surged, and drawn the scrutiny of a growing field…
Austerity vs The One Penny Solution
Paul Ryan, the GOP in general and European policy makers either just don’t get it, or they’re  trying to return us to the time where there was a Spanish Pope name Borgia (daughter Lucrezia), or my theory that Republicans are Neo Confederates is fact, not theory. To hear any of them talk, one would think…
U.S. Leadership – From Super Power to the World’s Problem Child
U.S. leadership, despite all its shortcomings and missteps, has been the brick and mortar of global stability since  World War Two. Despite the world experiencing a tectonic shift in economic and political power since the 19th century, no other nation, nor group of nations, is emerging that would be as prepared or equipped to exercise leadership…
Economic Policy – Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?
It’s time for the American electorate to stop listening to television “news organizations” that are more interested in stirring emotion and ratings than providing objective and meaningful analysis. Borrowing the title of this article from the iconic band Chicago, circa 1969 is oddly appropriate to where economic and political conditions currently stand in the U.S.…
Is the U.S. Middle Class About to Become Extinct?
Is the U.S. Middle Class About to Become Extinct? As long ago as 2005, many economists, including some at then-powerhouse banking conglomerate Citigroupconcluded that certain groups of Americans and the measurements based on those groups had become useless. “There is no such animal as the U.S. consumer,” Citigroup’s in-house economists had determined. Such descriptions as…
War : A U.S. Economic Strategy
Is it just me, or does the value of the U.S. dollar and the U.S. involvement in wars seem to follow one another around like high school best friends?  The Bretton Woods Accord and the status of the U.S. dollar as the world reserve currency coincided with the end of World War II (1939-1945).  The…
Revolutionary War-Republicans-And the New Confederacy
As a native of a historically significant Civil War city in the southern United States, as well as an economist, I have often had the feeling that by electing its first black President, the normal U.S. partisan politics were going to take on a completely new and intensified atmosphere. Not to make a direct comparison,…
Have Corporations Become Sovereign Countries ?
Have corporations become sovereign countries within our country? Is this the hidden agenda behind Citizens United, the War on Women, voter suppression, the vitriol surrounding the Affordable Care Act? Few would disagree that the world’s biggest companies appear to have as much influence, if not more, than sovereign nation states. David Rothkopf argues in his…
Another Alarming Failure of “Reagan” Economics
Except for a few Republicans stuck in the quagmire of Reaganesque , fallacy-riddled, supply-side economics, we know now that trickle-down economics simply does not work and never has. For proof, one merely has to look at the plethora of independent data that has flooded both economists’ observations and leading publications for more than two decades.…
Ryan Determined to Push Budget Deleterious to Workingclass
Paul Ryan puts together a budget like most Republican, frat-boy types; he lies, cheats, and steals. Poster boy for “the Republican new-breed conservative”, Ryan is many things, but suspicious that the public-at-large will see through his economic cow pies is not one of them. One would think that after the public plastering his 2012 budget…
Do Not Let The Republicans Frame the Gasoline Debate
For the life of me, I cannot understand how the people of the United States continues to let a chosen few run roughshod over our political discussions, much less how much we pay for gasoline. The “outrage of the week” for me has been the slow crawl of gasoline prices and how a few blockheads…
The JOBS Act: Brother Can You Spare a Dime?
The JOBS Act. Is there no end to the intent of Wall St. and the 1% to bring about the destruction of the U.S. economy? As dumbstruck as I remain by the inexplicable repetitiveness of the political enabling for speculators to continually gouge the average U.S. citizens, I am even more so by total Congressional…
What could bring gas prices back to earth.
The last time the price of gasoline was below $3 a gallon was just before Christmas in 2010. What would it take to get the price at the pump down from its current level of $3.83 a gallon to what it cost fifteen months ago? Is $3 a gallon a historical relic? What could bring…
The Truth About Gasoline Prices
What or who is actually to blame for the seemingly random peaks and valleys of the gasoline game? Gas prices have definitely tamped down President Obama’s political polling in the last few weeks and every time this happens cries go out for someone to do something. The truth is, U.S. gasoline prices rank 101th in…
Bank of America reaches side mortgage deal: report
Bank of America reaches agreement with US authorities. Could reduce the mortgages of some 200,000 borrowers in order to avoid fines of up to $850 million [repostus hash=cda9b8f0eb1ceb6d1ea38d92f7285ea0 title=Bank%20of%20America%20reaches%20side%20mortgage%20deal%3A%20report host=AFP short=16SQY]
Little Grover to the Republican Rescue
Little Grover Norquist and his manipulative masters of all things conservative, the billionaire Koch Brothers, are feeling a tad threatened these days. What with Republican Presidential candidates alienating voters in droves via inane rantings on the evils of contraceptives to the love of lakes, one can hardly blame the Republicans who want to rule The United States…
Why Have There Been No Wall Street Perp-Walks?
Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. announced in a speech last week that when it comes to fighting financial fraud, the Obama administration’s “record of success has been nothing less than historic.” Horse Meadow-Pies! Such a grandiose statement is not only self-promoting, and thus suspect on its face, it’s also just not true. Granted, Republicans…
Forget Dodd-Frank: Reinstate Glass Steagall
I can only imagine what a stampede of bison must have sounded like in the early 1800s. I assume it started as a barely audible rumble… maybe nothing more than a faint vibration. One thing is clear though. It was a sound that no one on the plains wanted to hear. Numbering in the millions,…
Libertarians – Historically Lousy Economics
Since the current Republican candidates hasten to promote “limited or no government,” I thought I would discuss the macroeconomic history of laissez faire – libertarianism of the last 150 years. This philosophy has many Ron Paul followers believing in it (and him) due to its simplicity and lack of necessity for understanding the myriad facets…
Proof That Austerity Does Not Work in a Recovering Economy
Economics is as much about timing and conditions as strategy and policy. Trying to implement austerity measures during a recession is tantamount to trying to kick a field goal in a 60 mile per hour headwind. There’s a time and place for virtually every economic policy known to man. The key is implementing the right…
Just How Scuzzy is Mitt Romney? You Have to Read it to Believe It !!!
I normally try to confine my posts to matters involving the economy. But sometimes, a speech, or a statement made by a politician so disgusts me that I simply have to comment on it or risk spontaneous combustion. Yesterday involved such an event. As reported in several Michigan newspapers, among them the Detroit Press, Republican candidate…
The Ultimate Greek Tragedy
The origin of so much or our most-respected and admired culture. Greece. Home to visionaries in mathematics, philosophy, art, architecture, and even democracy. How could so much promise go so wrong? One could ask the same of the U.S. I know, I know, we haven’t heard the name for at least a couple of weeks. So…
Capitalism-But With a Human Face
Solutions. A very simple concept. Identify a problem and take the necessary steps to resolve it. Do it in both a fair and equitable manner. But as the fourth year rolls by, in this global economic crisis, nearly everybody who can be blamed for the economic mess has been already been pointed out. Greedy, careless…
ObamaCare:The Realization of Hope
I have reluctantly watched all of the Republican Presidential “debates” to date. If I were participating in one of the more prevalent drinking games from my college days, my friends and I would all take a drink every time one of the participants said one of two pre-selected words. For the debates, those words would be…
Time for Europe AND America to Implement the One Penny Solution
I have addressed the European fiscal crisis in several previous posts as well as a plan to deal with the U.S. fiscal crisis (see below), but more than three years have passed since the onset of the 2008 financial crisis, and the economic downturn feels as endless as ever. Any hopes that it would resolve itself have…
2012–A Make or Break Year
In general I do not put much emphasis on examining the past in detail. It seems unproductive to me to look back at all that went wrong unless there is some evidence that by doing so, I can improve what is to come or even what might be to come because guessing to work as well…
Freddie and Fannie-The GOP Big Lie
There have been many lies promulgated regarding the meltdown in the real estate market, the subsequent Wall Street crash, and the seemingly unending unemployment crisis gripping the country some three years later. But none of the lies reach the level of intensity surrounding the GOP lie that basically states that Fannie Mae / Freddie Mac…
How About Some Good News For the Holidays?
Despite hand-wringing and forecasts of gloom and doom from politicians wanting to blame one another for the downgrading of America’s heretofore stellar credit rating, all is well in Whoville….for the time being. Yes, four full months after Standard & Poor’s stripped the U.S. of its AAA credit rating and said the world’s biggest economy was…
Is the Dollar the Next Euro?
As we are all aware, the United States is stuck in a slow growth recovery from the Great Recession of 2008 and 2009. And while there have been some encouraging signs in the job market lately, it’s no wonder that neither consumers nor investors are jumping up and down to spend their money When the…
Europe’s Perfect Economic Storm
What happens when an economy attempts a cold shutdown of one of the biggest debt spirals that the world has ever seen?  Well, buckle up and buy lots of canned tuna, we are about to find out. Europe’s ruling politicos have decided that they are going to “take their medicine” and put strict limits on…
The “Redistribution” Big Lie
I am so tired of hearing the same old tired lies coming out of the conservative propaganda machine about the redistribution of wealth in this country. President Obama’s original proposal to extend and deepen payroll tax cuts for 160 million workers AND their employers would have been paid for by a surtax on America’s 350,000 top earners. Moreover,…
Is College Still Worth the Cost?
As a bona fide member of several groups, Baby Boomers, Parents of Adults, AARP, etc., I have come to grips with many matters fairly well I think.   Fewer of my investments are paying off as well, if at all. My numerous college degrees, two undergraduate and one MBA, have become more of a hindrance…
The Newest Member of OWS
On Nov. 28, U.S. district judge Jed Rakoff rejected a $285 million settlement between the Securities and Exchange Commission and Citigroup. In so doing, he essentially walked out of the federal courthouse on Foley Square and became the single loudest protester of all the protesters in Zuccotti Park. In an unusually specific court order, Rakoff…
What No One Is Telling You
As we approach another new year, the political season will begin to heat up in the midst of the cold winter ahead. A great many things can happen between now and election day next November and if anyone could accurately predict what those things would be, they could instantly become part of the “1%”. Unfortunately,…
Tis The Season To Be–Focused On The Economy?
One of the more popular buzzwords nowadays are “lost decade.” It’s actually another way of expressing the fear that today’s global financial problems will paralyze economies and stock markets for 10 years or more. Now, it’s a legitimate worry. But addressing the immediate dangers won’t be enough to avert a lost decade in the U.S.…
It’s The Economy–Stupid(China’s)!!!
Question: “Is there any country in history that has managed to grow its economy stably after a property bust?” This is no philosophical inquiry. Over the course of the last two months, government officials have tried to turn China’s heated property market into something more equitable for middle-class home buyers. As a result, they have…
Something Is Seriously Wrong With The Global Economy
Forget Friday’s misleading drop in the unemployment rate okay? The evidence is building that global growth has stalled. And it’s about to get much worse.   Massive, bear market type volatility has even the most steel hearted market veterans feeling seasick from the ups and downs. Adding to the confusion has been some political and…
Washington–The Graveyard of the American Dream
Millions of Americans are facing a lost decade, living from paycheck to paycheck, struggling to pay their bills, having to borrow money and go deeper into debt. Blue-collar workers and the middle class feel they are falling further and further behind, no matter how hard they work. Older Americans are faced daily with the specter…
Inflation–Boogie Man or Casper the Friendly Ghost?
The last thing any candidate, anywhere in America wants to mention, is that the “I” word….unless it can be leveled at one’s opponent in some way. Inflation. There, I said it. No tsunami, no planet-killing asteroid, no 9.0 earthquake. The dreaded “Jimmy Carter Syndrome” as Republicans like to frame it, has been hiding in plain…
DEFENDING THE INDEFENSIBLE-THE GOP HITS A NEW LOW
Normally, it’s all I can do to post an article of mine every other day or so, but good lord, the Republicans just keep forcing my hand. How in the world the lame-stream media can just continue to allow Republicans to lie, cheat and steal with complete abandon and no challenge is beyond me.  …
The Really Big Lies that Politicians DO NOT Want You To Know
There seems to me to be a basic truth that the American population has come to accept that says: POLITICIANS CANNOT BE TRUSTED. Despite having made that discovery, most Americans seem to break that one short idiom down by adding a defining rationalization: POLITICIANS FROM THE “OTHER” PARTY CANNOT BE TRUSTED. The Occupy Wall Street…
Republicans and The Supercommittee: Winning! Duh?
On more than one occasion, I have found myself lying awake at night wishing that either the Republicans would find some actual morals(as opposed to the ones they so stridently feign), or at the very least stumble upon the epiphany that it’s ok not to hate their fellow Americans, even if they are poor. Since…
Grover Norquist and Joe Scarborough-A Marriage Made in Heaven
Straying from my normal subject of the economy, I would like to address possibly the worst case of that which is wrong with the political “reporting/commentary” so prevalent on television today.   The popularity of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” is widely held to be Joe Scarborough’s mix of good ole boy, Republican conservatism juxtaposed by the…
As America’s Economy Tanks Norquistitlians Toe the Line
New estimates from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office suggest that increasing aid to the unemployed could be the best policy for near-term job creation in the United States. Tax breaks for businesses, infrastructure spending, meanwhile, are not likely to boost short-term growth.   Just take a minute to think about waht that sentence says. The…
Another Stock Market Crash is a Virtual Certainty
Occupy Wall Street doesn’t know what or even necessarily how, but they know something is wrong with Wall Street. Paid talking heads and and partisan pundits keep saying that nobody really knows what the Occupiers want or what they are protesting against. Well, let me help OWS out and tell you exactly why every single…
Hypocrisy Abounds in Congressional Tea Party Pork Requests
In some of the more egregious hypocrisy taking place on Capitol Hill these days, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, the Republican leadership’s primary liaison to the Tea Party, represents the government-bashing, budget-slicing faithful with constant attacks on out of control or wasteful federal spending. Apparently, just how wasteful the spending may seem to Cantor depends…
College Students In Cri$i$–The Next Bubble
The graduating class of 2011 have a foreboding footnote on their diplomas: Most Indebted Class Ever–and the 2012 seniors will surpass them. Average student-loan debt for new graduates has reached $27,300, according to Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of FinAid.org. Add to that the loans parents took out for their children’s education, which students, more often than…
Political Mathematics Seems to Favor Republicans in 2012
From a strictly mathematical standpoint, the 2012 election is not looking good for the Democratic Party.   The Republican Party holds a solid majority in the House of Representatives , and the U.S. Senate, where Democrats hold a slim majority, also chances also seem likely to tilt into GOP control. Indeed, the election numbers don’t…
Does Anyone Feel That Shaking Beneath Their Feet Besides Me?
With its deadline swiftly approaching, the so-called super committee got some bipartisan cover from a respected panel of budget experts this week. The experts testified to the committee warning strenuously against inaction and urging it to consider sweeping changes to the federal government. With all of the focus on presidential candidates suffering brain-freeze or sex…
Will It Actually Take Another Great Depression?
I have now watched, I believe, four GOP debates for the upcoming election in 2012. Since being the leader of the United States is similar to death–in that until it’s happened to you, you may not be the best individual to command its understanding—it FIRST falls upon candidates to prove to like minded individuals, that…
The Extinction of YUPPIES
I generally attempt to remain, if non-partisan, at least partisan-fair. I personally think that many Democratic policies have contributed to the economic distress that has overtaken the American monetary landscape. So too have many of the Republican policies. Both political parties have made grievous errors in policy administration and the overuse of incentivizing or de-incentivizing…
Why Europe’s Financial Woes Matter to Every American
Competing against the Herman Cain/Michael Jackson/Gloria Allred/N*****head Ranch/ “newsworthy” juggernaut is difficult of course. Admittedly, ballot concerns on this day are correctly centered more in Ohio and Mississippi with extremely important issues to hundreds of thousands of Americans in the balance.  But I am determined to stay focused on largely economic issues and simply hope that some…
What if We Were Talking About China Instead of Greece Today?
Ah, America. We have such a penchant for grandeur. As we spend our limited attention spans watching our political parties play “No, You’re a Poot-head”, or for the past few weeks, our Republican presidential candidates forgetting that we now have the capability to actually play back statements they made 20 minutes ago, there are circumstances…
To Be or Not To Be: A Democracy
In defense of OWS, and in full-throated opposition to the characterization of OWS that has been purposefully misconstrued by the mainstream media outlets, I ask, “Whom do you trust more: American Democracy or the Financial/Political Establishment? For the sake of comparison, let’s look at Greece. On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” today, when the host of the…
The One-Penny Solution
When I started this little experiment in communications, the very first idea that I wanted to promulgate was perhaps the most important. As is customary, I do no want it lost in the day-to-day political clap trap that has devolved into the usual intellectual wasteland of political hucksterism. All I wanted was to express one easily…
Call Me Nostradamous?
Wouldn’t it be great to think that the congressional super committee is going to reach a bipartisan deal? Politically, it would be so refreshing to see Washington function for a change. But experience suggests to me that when all the smoke clears, there will be no deal.   So, you ask, what will happen? The Republicans…
Uncertainty Adversely Affects Employers and Wall Street? Balderdash!
One of the most common and least truthful, I dare say deliberate lies spread by Republicans these days is that “uncertainty” is stifling the economy. Eric Cantor, a.k.a. Mr. Slime, the House majority leader, is a primary proponent of this favorite Tea Party mantra. Specifically, says Mr. Cantor, “Jobs-destroying regulations have created a cloud of…
Oh Ricky…..You Got Some ‘Splainin’ To Doooooo
In a bid to jumpstart his stalled presidential campaign, Texas Gov. Ricky Perry unveiled a “bold” tax plan on Tuesday, promising that it would give the economy a much-needed lift. Perry, speaking at a South Carolina plastics factory, proposed a flat, 20 percent tax to dramatically simplify the tax code, allowing people to fill out…
The New Silent Majority
In a quiet suburb of Jackson, MS some church-goers gathered to chat about politics, their country, the announcement that all troops would be coming home from Iraq after 8 long, hard years. “Civility”, said Tom Richardson, a Democrat (one of the few willing to admit it in the reddest of red states), “There’s no such…
Why It’s Time for OWS to Take a Stand
Nobody in a position of authority in the U.S. Government seems to understand the threat to American institutions and ideals represented by the influence the financial industry now holds on our governing process. We are steamrolling towards a destabilizing division in our society where one interest group is running the nation to their own economic…
Rethinking Jobs and China
Ok, I understand the propensity to wish that all of the manufacturing jobs that we’ve lost to China could somehow, magically, be returned to the land between the oceans. I also wish all of the hair that fell out of my head from 1980 until yesterday would magically start growing again. Neither are going to…
Yes, Another Blog about Occupy Wall Street
Having offered my own alternative solutions to the U.S. economic and tax policy screw-ups that are taking us quickly towards another Great Depression in an earlier blog, I have to wonder, “Is class warfare such a bad idea”? Willard Mitt Romney seems to think that’s what OWS is about. Although the “average” American has become…
A Non-Typical Night
I sometimes compare marriage to the Middle East….A religious experience of sorts (otherwise known to my wife as “hell on earth”). In order for two such diverse cultures to coexist peacefully, there must be give and take from both sides. I pride myself on always doing as much as I possibly can to promote peace….…
A Reasonable Non-Partisan Budget Plan
As the Congressional “Super-Committee” grinds to a probable stalemate, perhaps there is a much simpler way to accomplish the primary goal without adding extra pressure on the already fragile economy. I won’t get into what I feel is the role that pure politics has played in getting the U.S. to this point, but given the…
